Electric Fan clutch

I am working on a fan clutch and fan from a 6.0. I'm waiting on a die to make a threaded adapter. And then I'll trim the fan down to at least 22".

Sure wish our radiators were closer to square so we could use bigger fans. I'm thinking about doing poly motor mounts before I trim things just so it isn't sagged.

So I towed my first real load this evening. Had 12k behind me. 75* outside I had the AC on pulled out on the road and as I got up to speed the temp started climbing pretty fast. Switched on the override and temps quickly came down left the override on for the 30 mile trip and no VB issue's at all. Even got the EGTs up to 1200* on one hill.

Haha, "...up to 1200* on one hill". Mine lives @1100 and cruised past 1200 on the hills around here- towing nothing. 1300*.

Come visit and let's put that thing to the test. You know there's a lot you want to take back home down here....

Yes, 1200 is easily reachable with the RV in tow while climbing 5%+ grades.

What was the final fan selection? The one from a PowerStroke 6.0? And if so, how was cut it down and balanced?

Also, what were the observed temps and why not let the controller do its job?

My point wasn't that 1200 was so hot as that my temp gauge barely wiggled. Still running the original fan setup, one of the things on my to do list is to wire up the led on my override switch to come on anytime the clutch is engaged. The fan is so quiet and the adjustment screw so sensitive I'm having a hard time getting it dialed in. So rather than mess with the controller right now I just hit the override. Temps never moved more than 1 tick of the gauge

So, the fan is from the 5.7L gasser?

For dialing-in the controller, perhaps run a filament bulb into the cab to help with visually seeing when the controller actuates?

Ok, that is the fan that I thought but was not 100% certain given the refernce. Just wanted to know if any of the diesel fans worked out / fit. Guess not.

The 6.0l setup would require a custom bushing as there shaft is 40 mm vs our 36mm. I think the new duramax has one now, but not sure.

So another update. Pulling the same load back. I started off with a relatively cool engine and left the controller in the regular position. I didn't get the instant rise in temp this time I'm surmiseing because the rad was cool. Everything was about the same as before but OK did see VB slightly more temperature swings. Not much more though. I did have to go thru a 45 MPH section with a pretty decent little hill. So going up that hill with the torque converter not locked the temp started to climb. Never got over about 200-205 but only because the hill was short. So I'm still going to do the 6.0 fan just not very soon. Still way better than stock.

If you can find somebody to machine the 36 MM to 40 MM bushing, get them to make 2. I'll gladly buy the other one from you.

Need to do some more digging, but there MAY be hope yet. The 2011+ DURAMAX uses an electroviscous fan clutch on them. No info yet though on what thread is on it, but knowing GM, I bet they kept the same one to reduce costs. The only kicker is, I believe the fan blade is pretty HUGE on them as I know GM stepped up the radiator size on the newer trucks quite a bit. ROCKAUTO has both the clutch and fan blade available from AC DELCO now, but since they're old enough now, you might be able to find one in a junkyard to get the fan and clutch from.

Sounds good. Just razzing you on the 1200 thing.
So already sounds like a success over stock- too cool. Yes pun intended.

Ferm I plan on making my own bushing I already bought the die. It was Leroy's idea to tear apart an old fan clutch and then just thread the outside. I probably won't get around to it til next winter but if you want to send me just the nut off of a clutch I'll make you one too.

Did some digging, and there may be a simpler option. The 08-13 EXPRESS vans with a DURAMAX and the 4500/5500 also used an ev fan clutch. The 4500/5500 used a 23" or 24" fan, but I believe the vans all got a 21" fan blade. They used a 6 bolt fan instead of a 4, but if it's the right size then it should work. They list the same thermal fan clutch and fan blade for an 08 van as the early DURAMAX's used, so I would guess that the ev clutch would just be a 6 bolt 21" fan. I would find one to go on mine if I could get away with it, but I don't have the clearance in front for the ev fan clutches electrical portion(gm put the wires going in the front, I believe FORD brought the wires in on the spin on side to minimize overall clutch height). It's worth looking in to if you want to stick with the ev fan clutch, and it's a setup meant for a diesel, so it will move the air at low rpm's you need.
