EGR Valve

If the connector on the EGR itself is making contact, it is probably a bad EGR stepper motor. Very common for the LBZs though the P046C is more so.

here is the bulletin number. for pickups you need to replace the motor only and do a pcm reflash. so make sure you remove the hyperpac. don't bring it(the bulletin) to there attention until you know what they are replacing. they may not check bulletins and just replace the motor and valve as an assm.

#06-06-04-066B: LBZ, LLY, Engine with Rough Idle, Poor Performance, Black, White Exhaust Smoke, MIL/SES Light On, DTCs Set (Reprogram ECM and Replace EGR Motor or EGR Valve, If Necessary) - (May 1, 2008)

24k miles. Brought it in today and they changed it fast. Told them p0403 and would need a new egr. They said ok and called me a lil while later to get it. haha
I was impressed with them.

Nick,

You'll never believe this, but remember that day when you got that first EGR code? Your truck must have infected my truck, because now I am getting EGR codes, for the first time since I blocked and sticked it. I'm getting P046C about once every three days. I have tried the stock tune, but I still get the code, so I think my valve needs to be replaced.

Need Advice from the members: I run EFI, so should I filter out the EGR codes and forget about it, since I have it blocked anyway, or should I remove the blocking plate and take it in for warranty replacement?

If I was using EFI, I'd block it too. No sense getting it replaced if its just gonna sit there dead anyways.

I take mine in tomorrow.

I have an appointment on friday. I'll find out then what the problem is. I have no doubt that they'll probably try and stick me with the bill.

not only the lly/lbz.... my lb7 has had it fail 4 times now. dealer replaced under warranty (emissions) which is part of the 100k powertrain warranty. now that i'm over 100k, its on me now.

Warranty covered it. They replaced the entire EGR. Overall a decent experience at the dealership. I was in and out.

For some reason though, my Predator dosent seem to be as strong. I rolled around stock today and had to double check to see if I still had a tune loaded in there...It felt way too strong to be stock...I havent driven it stock in about 25,000 miles. It just felt really potent...I have no idea why. It actually smoked more stock than it did tuned...

Ive also realized that there's no point in calculating my mileage here. Everyone drives like an asshole.

i cant vouch for the validity of this but iwas told by someone who tunes duramax motors that if/when an egr system begins to fail, the ecm can pick up on that and adjust power/fuel/etc accordingly. it can make the truck actually lose power if your egr fails.

like i said, i heard it second hand but it may explain why the truck felt stronger after having it replaced.....

glad the dealer took care of you...:yesnod:

personally i would leave it blocked, but bring it in for replacement anyway.

Has anybody left their block in and asked the dealer to replace the EGR? I would think they would use that as a lame excuse to not have to replace it, claiming that I made a modification that voided the warranty.

Nick, glad to hear everything worked out and you're now code free. I can't offer any input on the more power thing or not, but as my truck is all stock if my EGR ends up failing at some point I'll have it replaced and I will report on the theory that the ECM slowly adapts to a failing one.

I don't know about you but I really don't like it when everything isn't 100% on my truck. First thing I did when the snow was gone and the roads were clean was take mine to the dealership to have the passenger window and track cleaned of debris and lubed, it was squeaking something fierce when you rolled it up.

unless they did an after the repair verification checking flow ect, they would never even know. the blocker slides in at the back of the egr cooler at the exhaust flange. don't ever even touch that to replace the valve.

Doesn't mean an observent tech wouldn't notice it though... IMO it's not worth the risk to leave it in because of that chance.

Glad you got it fixed Nick.

i guess as a tech and being part of this diesel performance world i am biased in saying that. i let alot of things go by that maybe most won't, not sure.

This is just my common sense talking, but I think most if not all cases where the customer gets grief for their mods via the techs when seeking warranty repairs comes down from the service department management directing them to report anything suspicious. Most of the dealer techs I have talked with are gearheads themselves and have a lot of the same mods done to their personal vehicles, and therefrore could care less what mods you have. The dealer probably got burned by GM in the past when they didn't get paid for a big warranty job or three because of mods they "overlooked" and got caught somehow.

Not to mention that lifted trucks down here are a dime a dozen. And selling then with 6-8" with 35's or 37's off the showroom floor is something I've never seen before until I moved. Its obvious to me that they must be more lenient down here than any other dealership that I've seen.
