DaHooooley Up from the ashes

Find a five year old little kid and stuff his A$$ under the hood with instructions on what to do with the bolts.

A got the bolts down in from the top ok and got them tight. It was the small flange nuts that hold the extra crap on the stud top that got a tad intense on my patience.

Too bad that MA General did not install two acess plugs (Rubber) in the firewall so those bolts could be easily reached.

Two two inch diameter ports in the firewall would allow those bolts to be removed in a matter of a couple minutes without your hands looking like you were involved in a 5 alarm cat fight.

Out here in the Pacific NW there are loads of older trucks and Burbs that have pristine bodies.

The 91 (Black and Red) was found on craigs list.

The fellow adverstised it for sale or trade. "Will consider Tools"
I traded him a small plasma cutter that I had purchased some years before in a closeout sale at the welding warehouse.

Figure it cost me about $1200 for the Burb.

I have installed new plugs, fuel filter, a used distributor and a new module and a fuel pump relay.
The rig runs perfect. Does use a little oil (valve guides likely as it will "Puff" if let idle a long time)

Here are some Pix to drool over. :smile5:

227K on the clock, a fresh 700R4 just months before I got the rig. Guys wife said she could not drive the truck any more as the paint on the hood was peeling a little and
"What would people think"

OMG I can't deal with this sort of reasoning. She bought a new little SUV of some sort and her Old man is shaking his head. She has commanded him to get rid of the junker.

Missy sits wagging her tail with delight.

The Cruise control even works right, can ya believe that stuff, OK

My Plan is to (In time) replace the 350 with a 6.2 and a lovely near new Banks turbo setup I found.

OH BTW the 91 has warn hubs too YESSSSS my kind of 4x4
Shows who is wearing the pants in that family:D

I like those sort of families.

The only thing I need to make the 91 almost perfect is a good used BLACK hood.
Found one at the U Pull it yard but some puke and tossed it off on the ground and dinged it all up.

Oh well, I may just sand mine down and shoot it flat back and put some sort of Gawdy decal in the center, maybe a Transam bird or ???????? OMG How red necked.

Just got home with the 91, what a sweet ride even if the engine dont rattle ):h

Had another 91 a couple years ago. Loved that truck but got stupid and sold it

This truck had a nice lift plus some 35" tires.

Was a 6.2 truck. (GMC)

Needed a little body work on the front fenders and the hood painted but was a fun truck.

Local kid came along and just had to have it so it went down the road.

Oh well, the Red and Black 91 is much nicer. Maybe I will jack this truck up to the moon and put huge tires under it.

Never know what missy is a gonna do next.

They are long gone. Has some decent diggers on it now.

This was a city rig when I got it. The rims were rusty chrome and they are trash.

Got a set of the factory wide base wheels with some 31" tires now. (Used ones from another rig I have (87 burb thats providing the diesel)

I would like a 6-8 inch full spring lift with some 33" tires or maybe 35's

Its not a front burner item though.

They are out there. Now with the Obama money give away for your old clunker, there will be fewer of them.

The local Ma General store has a lovely 88 K5 Blazer sitting out back in "Federal Row"
Bedamned if its not a diesel too. Runs nice but will get destroyed anyway.

What a shame to ruin such a lovely rig.

Local guy picked up a 99 Burb 4x4 with a broken 6 and a half in it for $500
YESSSS you read that right $500.00 Five hundred dollars and the thing is just MINT.

Broken crank me thinks.

Be an easy fix. Scrap yard romp or two and a little ebay shopping and all sweet again.

Oh yessss

Nice looking motor. i wanted to paint mine CAT yellow with black valve covers ( just got her going :D) but i had no wheels and wanted it done ASAP, so painting didn't happen:nonod:

also i want that burb!- with a diesel in it of course ):h

How bout from underneath with a 4 foot long extension and a swivel socket?

yup thats how i do it. well a bunch of wobble extensions and a universal on a socket but its about the same thing. still a bloody PITA :rolleyes5:

There is nothing easy about those top two bolts.

Although going back in with everything clean and nice it was not too bad.
Was able to fiddle the bolts into the holes and tighten with the fingers and then used a Box end wrench to get the suckers tight.

The nuts on the stud tops were done with me up top guiding the socket and my buddy under the rig with the long extensions .

Just could be a whole lot easier though had a little forethought been given to the issue.

Two rubber plugs placed in the firewall would have been perfect. Just pull the carpet down a tad, remove the plugs and poof, bolts out.

Now that would have been just to easy, HUH.

If i ever have to do those bolts again i think ill will take a holesaw to the firewall and put in those plugs like you say. It would be well worth it i think.

Brooklyn

I am getting to an age now that I am burnt out on projects.

Just want to settle back and relax instead of crawling under something ya know.

I will never stop screwing with stuff though, its just my nature to have my little fingers into something.

I can remember back in 1984, I bought a couple huge Busses from a local bus auction.
Gonna make me a Motor Home.

OMG I was living in town at that time and the neighbors were horrified when they looked out and saw the giant beasts parked in my driveway.

OH yeah buddy, they had three fits and fell in it.

Took me two years to get my little toy up and ready to travel.

Took it to Expo 86 up in BC Canada.

Had a swell time. Rig ran like a champ all the way from Newberg Oregon up to BC and back.
Got about 12 MPG too. Not bad for a 35 foot coach Here are a few pix of the little GM Coach. ( was a MODEL TDH4519)
Had the 6V71 Detroit with the Allison V drive tranny

Ah Yess the toys of childhood

Wow, Robyn - that's a GREAT story!

More pictures! How did the interior turn out? What happened to that project?

-Rob :)

You got to love that..........That's the biggest Burb i've seen in a while!

BTW, I graduated High School in 85.......So that means in 84 I was rockin a Moped!

Hey me too on the 1985 grad. My ride was a 72 Nova with 250 straight 6 and a glide! Would go 55 in first and 98 in second :D

Im a 70 grad.

Sold the Bus when I built my new place back out at the ranch where I live now.
Too young to really use the bus much.

The interior turned out sweet. Bought a lot of good stuff from an RV place that had slightly scratched or dented stuff.

The fridge had a tiny ding in the door about the size of a pencil eraser and was in a lower corner.

The upholstery was all new with captains chairs up front and two barreel chairs behind them. The Dinette was all custom to fit the chassis as was the seat cushions.

Used RV toilet and shower. Had a full queen sized bed in the back.
This was a center Isle layout as the chassis had the wheel wells to deal with.

The bus was fun.

Sold it late in 93 when I was ready to move.

At the time it was tough to sell.
I think we got about $20K

It was a transit coach and everyone thinks that they have to have a Highway coach.

The little GM was a lovely coach. Drove nice and was very quiet inside.
35 feet forward of the engine and the driver and copilots seats were about 6 feet in front of the center of the front axle.

Like flying a cloud. very smooth with full air ride on both axles.
Dual height control valves on the rear and a single valve up front so the chassis could oscilate and not stress the structure.

Was a real joy redoing the front glass. That 6 piece window setup was a nightmare to get the rubber grommet and all the glass in place. Took 3 of us to keep things right until I got the retaining band in place and locked down.

Had two roof air units. one up front and one in the back.

6.5 KW Genset with both 110V and 220V
150 Gallons of fresh water and equal amount on the gray/black water tank.

Shower was one that you could actually get into.

Doing one of these is a real trip when you have never done anything like that before.

Just had to use the WAG METHOD (Wild assed Guess)

Would have been better if it had the V8 detroit though. The V6 was OK but not a screamer.

The steep hills would bring it down to the point that you had to drop it into Hydraulic drive and howl along at just below shift speed which was about 25mph. (Detroit on the governor at 2100 rpm)

Once the thing could hack the grade then you could let it upshift to direct
(no converter) and on the freeway you could use the OD and really roll. OD would allow about 70 mph

Non Turbo 2 stroke detroit.

Town injectors so it made zero smoke and got great mileage.

I removed the VH tranny and swapped in a VS2 (Hydraulic, direct and OD)

Cool tranny and easy to work on.

The auto part was controlled by a flyweight governor and the back half of the box came off easily to service the converter and the clutch packs.

Designed for quick easy service.

UPDATE

Got out this morning and got the exhaust manifolds and Xover pipe bolted back on.

Will see about getting some of the accessories bolted back on tonight.
Getting close now.

The new battery cables are supposed to be here this afternoon (I hope)
