Couple questions on my first diesel.

Hello everyone....

I just bought a 94 GMC 2500 with a 6.5 TD (166K Kms), and I am going through the required maintenance when you first buy a vehicle. Such as all the filters/fluids, a new set of glow plugs (duraterms).

This is my first diesel and I have yet to buy a service manual so I am unsure on a few things.

When I replace my fuel filter (engine bay) is it as simple as it looks? Just unscrew the used filter, screw on the new one, crack the bleed valve on the top (little black part) turn the key to the on position and when the diesel starts to come out tighten the valve and that's it?

Second question is I have owned it for a few weeks and an issue has arisen where after driving it for ~1/2 hour it just dies.... however it restarts every time. Its kinda random, happens 3 X in a row then not for 1/2 hr..... then again.....very intermittent. Its kinda like when you shut the truck off by taking the key out....immediate dead... no stumble just dead.

Is this the PMD failure I have read about ( I have read for about 10 hours before I posted anything)? It is a Stanadyne PMD still located on the IP. I was told by the previous owner that the IP was replaced about 1.5 years ago (20K Kms). When the IP gets replaced does the shop usually transfer over the PMD or does the IP come with a new one?

As well I am planning on getting a remote PMD (what is the other term FMD?) with the heat sink asap.

Your vehicle will not automatically fill the filter housing with the key. That's later. You'll need to trigger the lift pump. I just use a paperclip to bypass the liftpump relay under the hood. Not sure if it's the same on the 1994. BTW, welcome aboard, you've found the place.

Okay, so it was the PMD...... installed a remote mounted driver and the stalling issue has not come back.

I have a few more questions now though....
1. What is the oil pressure "supposed" to be while idleing?
2. Those of you that have oil temperature gauges how often (with not hauling anything) does the oil temp go over 170 degrees? I am thinking of installing a larger oil cooler with a thermal switch that turns on an electric fan at 170 degrees.
3. What is the stock boost level (psi)?
4. my stock volt meter on the dash fluctuates as the turn signal flashes on and off, is this normal or an indication that maybee my alternator and/or my batteries need some attention?

readings can vary quite abit with the factory guages. Mine is about 50ish cold idling 30ish when hot idling. stock boost can vary quite abit too. alot depends on the exhaust ie how plugged is the cat. should be max of about 4-7psi. some get higher. fluctuations are fairly normal on the volt meter unless it is moving alot.

YOu should look at All of you grounds,,, be sure they have a good connection and are clean. then buy some $4 or so wire with a few loop connections, and then connect that to the + (Pos) post on the back of the Alternator then to your Battery. This will help carry that 14+ Volts to your batteries better, and will stop that bouncy Alt gauge needle. and incased you missed my Brilliant thread for new owners,, check this out!

Hello again..... So now I am getting into some hauling of trailers.

As it is right now it is pretty much stock (performance wise) except a 4" exhaust. It had the HD suspension and rear brakes (I decoded the vin).

What is the towing capacity of a vehicly like mine? And so noone has to go re-read the thread it is a 1994 GMC 6.5 turbo diesel with a 3.73 rear end (IIRC).

So why not put all the new info you got into your sig?

BTW, Welcome back!

I did think of that, and I did try to update it.... however when I signed up I barely figured out how to do it. This time I didn't figure it out.... got to frustrated! :)

I just bought two trucks with 6.5s and almost the first thing that went out was the PMD in a matter of a few months. I would replace the PMD with an after market one with the extension and heat sink. about 300 bucks and 30 minutes of labor, faster if you don't stop for beer

Take a look at this...

Actually, I think Warwagon had the easiest way to run the pump without the key on in start--on the ODB1 connector there is a red wire, jump that pin to +12 from the fuse box and the pump runs. Wiring diagram calls it a Priming circuit but does not show where it goes---I don't remember which pin tho, definitely not A or B.

I am looking at a 33 ft triple axle enclosed trailer, the total appx weight that I would be carrying in it would be around 6000lbs. So 6000 lbs plus the weight of the trailer, with the proper hitch and anti-sway bars (I think they are called) in your opinions would my truck be able to haul it without maxing out the engine/trans/suspension?

'94 L65HO with 3.73 gears, the "HD" 2500 is rated at 13k with AT and 11k with MT. That's combined Gross, truck and trailer max. Hitch or 5th wheel towing you are at 7k for the trailer with either tranny. Per GM.
