I was asleep at the switch and overfilled my truck by about 1/2 quart. Should I drain some out or is that ok?
Thanks,
Bob

The reason your not supposed to overfill on oil is because the throws will hit the oil and start to churn it. This will cause aeration in the oil, so now instead of just oil, you have oil with air trapped in it. Not sure on the crankshafts proximity to the oil level but I would just go ahead and take out that extra half a quart. It'll take you 5 minutes... not even.

Bill heath ran way high on oil to make sure the upper was getting lubed at 4700RPM during the speed records.

Don't know the details, but I'm sure it was more than 1/2 quart.

Coupled with a High Volume oil pump, and too much oil (talking quarts) the result was a lengthy article in the fall 09 MaxxTorque detailing the thought process with the associated flaws in that logic when applied to the high demands and shift points and the pictures showing bent connecting rods. Good thing the crank was forged and we were able to at least get it on the trailer (no wench).

1/2 quart with low volume and <3000rpm operations won't cause these problems but it, as has been stated, if you're concerned about it, drain the excess and give yourself the peace of mind.

On a personnal note, I was out of time and had the oil changed for me last month. They listed 10quarts on the billing but said that they only put in "the correct amount." I showed them the dipstick that indicated 2" over the full mark. They drained the oil.
Won't be going back there again.

I'm glad this was at the top of the forum...I've actually been running high since my last change (I am to blame). I actually thought I put in the amount that the manual says to put in...Maybe I'll slide under sometime this week and let a little out.

Just changed my oil. It took the entire 8 quarts with mobil-1 filter. Almost to the top of the hashmarks. I've always added 8 quarts, but all this recent talk I've never stopped at 7 and checked it after filter filled up. It called for add one quart almost to the money.

I add an extra 1/2 quart to my 6500 RPM LS2 gas engine. After the engine starts there is at least 1/2 quart gone from the pan. The LS2's are famous for spinning the #6 rod bearing due to low oil pressure after a hard track launch. Front sump pickup design - stupid GM...

So 1/2 quart extra isn't going to hurt a low RPM diesel after start up. Because you are at the full mark with the engine running... (And the full mark clears stuff with the engine off.)

i typically add a little because i can't prefill the filter at its current location (or else I'd be dumping it all over me). But that doesn't account for why its still overfull.

FUMOTO quick drain valve is your friend :D

I had it on my rig, and I never worry about possible over filling. I know I can just go under, open the valve enough to drain excess oil and close...

I've been thinking about that. I get to the 'what thread size' and i give up, not wanting to get the wrong one.
