Can the 6.5 pull 12,000lbs?

That may be true but if you have an accident and DOT determnes that you are overloaded then your in big trouble.

I see a lot of guys running around now with DOT numbers on their door like a semi truck. I wonder if they can get aproved to haul that much weight. Im sure they would then need a comercial license plate.

I was thinking of putting F350 springs under an F250 a while back and was told I would need to get an engineers stamp of aproval. Thankfully I got rid of the blue oval and got a real truck with a bow tie. New trucks can haul much bigger loads now days too.

Some states require a USDOT number for any permit holder, even non-commercial.
 
around here anything that is considered commercial ie a business is supposed to have one even pickups. I've seen other contractors pulled over by the DOT for inspection just because they have signs on they're pickups
 
Ive never seen DOT numbers here before but the guy I know with the f350 said that according to the rules he really needs a cdl hauling that big trailer. I started noticing pickups with the dot number and figured they hauled a big trailer like he had. Now I seen it a lot and even seen busted up 3/4ton 6.5L farm trucks with a dot number now. Maybe the state changed to rules to bring in more money.
 
Up armored HMMWVs are at 12K before adding radios, racks, gear, weapons, people.... as stated, you'll be find with the weight aspect.

"Speed is optional, stopping is mandatory." Drive safe.
 
Thats funny you all talk about this i have been dot'ed in my tractor trailer 25 or 30 times in the last two years but in my personal p/u truck ive never been stoped and stupid yes a 902 cat wheel loader with a spare bucket, grapple, and tree boom on a tag trailer 50 mph top speed as the worn 6.5 would pull it no faster i had a forida dot pass me and wave..

I hope not, from what Ive seen even the farmers have DOT # on the busted up pickups. Id be done, my plates and ins is to much already and Ive never even been pulled over before. The Lowes parking lot is a good place to see pickups with dor numbers. Next time I see some guy get out of a truck with the # I'll have to ask why they need those numbers and see if they have a commercial plate.

I "think" it has to do with weight, If the GVWR exceeds, X amount and it's a working vehicle, Farm, Delivery, etc.

But Registration with Pleasure Plates......There should be no need for a DOT #........
 
The axle load is how they are getting everyone around me right now. Most people have gone to tandem wheel goosenecks so they can haul plenty of weight on trailer. But then they have there truck axle overloaded. So weight distribution is the key to it all.

This is the biggest thing to get right. It is worth the extra minutes to get it right before you tie her down. Too much tongue weight on a heavy load you gotta jam on the brakes to turn ( real pucker factor). Not enough tongue weight and you'll burn your tires off tryin to move it.

I took a load of scrap in with my 95 Tahoe gasser. trailer=2100#,,, scrap weight 12000#. Tahoe sat 2" lower than factor and towed it fine. As for stopping that was different. But that scrap load help pay for the 94 dually and trailer brake controler. : )
