Blow By

A thought... Oilmiser.com look at the vapor guard. I spoke to Dick he says if someone can email him with pictures of cdr and talk with him he said he could possibly modify it to work. He needs an oil per hour volume amount to start with. It does have to mounted vertically.

Or the other EIY (engineer it yourself) people -this concept might give you more ideas. I use almost no oil and no blow by so kinda pointless for me to chase until I get some more miles on it to see what really works.

Is it possible that exhaust being blocked cause the blow by??
It may be and be over looked.

I'm doing an experiment with the cdr, I opened it up and filled it with some steel wool. Hopefully it will trap the oil and let it drain back to the valve cover.

The first two pics are the opened cdr

Everything set back together

I put a thin bead of red silicone, then bent the lip back down.

I had done one previous and cut it apart then Tigged it back together, doing that the diaphram had to be removed. This way it wasn't harmed.
Well I can say that oil consumption is way down, I haven't tried the one with the diaphragm still intact.

There are no vapors coming out of the dipstick or fill cap.

Originally you had said that you had little smoke coming out the oil fill, now none?

Your main problem was oil consumption which you blamed on the nano fiber air filter?

What I mean is if crank case pressure was up or a problem, oil vapors would likely escape out of those two places.

Oil consumption increased from a liter every 1000+ miles to a liter every 500 miles or so when the filter change was made. Now it is back to normal or maybe even less consumption. The filter is just tighter than a k&n.

If you have a 6.5 that's blowing smoke out of both the fill and the dipstick, do you think this steel
Wool packed CDR solution will stop or slow that?

No, it would have less effect as it is a restriction of sorts between the crank case and the turbo inlet. It would likely make it worse.

I was just responding to Simon's suggestion that it may have increased crankcase pressure. If it has it isn't noticeable.

Very interesting thread, I also have problems with advanced oil consumption since the addition of my new turbo. I do not think that my light haze of blow-by is enough to warrant the amount of oil I have to add. I have been trying to envision some sort of trap for a while now, at first it was just to see how much oil was going through the CDR. Now I think that a trap may be the only permanent solution.

The provent crancase oilseperator valve.
look in my sig,..the 98

It works good for taking the oil out, but it leaves a slight positive crancase pressure of .5 PSi at idle and .2 full trottle

Bison, I'm interested in the Provent.

Which model size? 150? 200?

Can you post a photo of how yours is mounted? Did you eliminate the CDR?

How much did it reduce oil consumption?

Cost?

Where can I buy?

I should explain that most of the miles are below 30 mph with two round bales on the truck driving through a foot or more of snow. Regular driving would see oil consumption way less. This truck gets worked hard.

I have model 200
I mounted the provent in the spot were normally the fuel manager resides ( the FM is relocated to the dr side fender)
The provent oil drain line(home made steel) runs from under the provent and over the bell housing to behind the oilfilter were it exterminates below the oil level in the side of the oil pan(very hard if not impossible to do with the engine in the truck)
I installed the provent at the same time i rebuild the engine, the CDR was eliminated.
I don't know what the reduction in oil consumption would be with the provent on an engine with lots of blowby, all i know is mine doesn't use a drop trough the intake, but both front and rear crank seal started sweathing within 500 km of rebuilding but both are now leaking steady with 45000 km on the engine( i blame the leaks on the constant positive crank case pressure the provent seems to maintain.)
I think i paid $ 200 + change for it 4 yr ago.
There are mann & hummel dealers in the US,..google it.
I have pics somewere,..have to look them up.

If i had to do it again i would just pipe the CDR to the road

Bison, based on your experience with leaking crank seals and the complicated installation, I think I'll pass.
