Bad Injector ?

check that ect with carcode see how closely it matches the existing air temps. Bill heathe had me lay a thermometer on the engine with the hood closed and check the temp on it just before starting.

will do. I suppose the smoke could be a bad glow. They are duratherms. I got them from Heath.

I was getting the impression that the noise was hanging around after warm up, she quietens down once warmed up then?

Cheers
Nobby

well that kinda quited down as well but yes you were correct. The noise got better when I cut the tdco to -1.06 from -1.50. I did double up the PS. Maybe a nozzle was sticking ?? It's gonna be cold tonight so I'll see how it starts tommrow. I was going to pull the injs out this weekend.

It started fine today with minimal smoke but something else I noticed. it's about 25 degrees out tonight and with no load on the truck if I give it half throttle cruising down the road and hold it there I can hit 1000 degs on the pyro like nothing. WTF is wrong with this truck. I wish I had a stock ecm to put back in but I am paraniod to mess with the one in the Burb. That thing is running mint right now.

are you 110% sure that pyro is accurate? That's ridiculous how fast it's heating up.

I can't get my pickup over 900*F or normal coolant temp and that's running Heath's GL4, 15 psi floored in 3rd TC locked up 65 mph and climbing pretty quick up a 6% grade. Even dragging 7K up that same 6% grade(not floored of course but in 3rd TC locked at 55mph) with the same mods(save for the older GM-5 back then) it wouldn't touch 1000*F and i know it's getting plenty of fuel.

Something sounds wrong there.

25f and 1000 on a light cruise acceleration?

My stock (mostly) 98 will only hit 1000 empty if I'm hot footing it up a pretty steep hill. Even then, it'll only top 1100 if I make a real effort at it...

It is an Autometer pro comp gauge and the sensor is in the ex manifold right under the turbo. Also I noticed I have ALOT of soot on the bed by the ex pipe. I think Bill gave this thing WAAAYYYY too much fuel. I may look around for a stock ecm. The engine is loud . Powerwise it runs like a bat out of hell. I mean it's an ECDRW. It's got some weight to it and it pulls better than my cummins did which should not be.
If I put carcode on this thing is there anyway to tell how much fuel it's getting ? Like if the ecm was programmed for too much ?

Just ease up on the right foot;)

It must move pretty good at 1/2 throttle when it's hitting 1000 EGT.

I'll pull out my car code and check today, but I don't think so.

I can't even read that PCM data with my tunercat II and WinflashOBDII software.

It seems reading the calibration off these PCM's is problematic.

Lyndon wester had to send me and original calibration file for me to modify and when I talked to John at TC he said the 6.5 PCM's can't be read.

Seems more like the software was written to protect the 6.5 tuners out there (as in, you can't download thier custom flash).

I can understand that.

:)

You should though get a real time reading of how much fuel when running.

My AE as one of the gauging features has fuel rate so I am sure carcode does.

That's alot of temp unloaded tho, of course the two things that sprang to my mind were gauge and then the super longshot of your brakes grabbing slightly or the like.

If you have a handheld digital temp thermometer then with a heat gun/propane source you could at least check the gauge. Pyro's usually do not go bad tho.

Cheers

I doubt it's the Pyro. Autometer does not make junk plus I am getting a decent haze from this thing. It won't run 1000 deg at half throttle but I can get to 1000 while accelerating . I should take the truck for a cruise with my video camera. This all started after the Heath reflash . I really think Bill gave it too much fuel.

Hey Nobby, did you ever get a chance to see if AE can do cyl kill if using a 2002 program ? I would be curious. I really don't like Carcode. I can't get the dashboard to work either on CC.

Black smoke could be too much timing.
Pre-turbo exhaust leak or lack of boost?
Restricted intake?

Is this a full throttle run to get 1000 degrees? That is the only way I would understand too much fuel is WOT. Less than WOT is a lack of boost or too much timing.

What is it's peak EGT as 1000 degrees isn't the 'It's melting down Jim' limit...

Sounds good to me.

IF your pulling your trailer up hills and your getting 1100 easily, then time to worry.

How is your boost? Dont' forget, the easiest way to increase EGT's is to increase IAT's (IE, turbo Ineffeciency.)

You worry too much bro :)

Your truck runs really strong. I remember that haze though from the ride you took me on, and I can't get my truck to do that one bit on the stock tune.

As soon as I can take a ride during daylight hours I'll do a video of the pyro and rpms and post it. Another thing I never quite got with these negines is why they are so loud under light acceleration but quieter under WOT. Even my CUCV does that. The smoke is more likedark grey haze not belching black smoke. Boost is good. Running 12-14 psi at WOT. Right where it should be. Just seems to hit 1000 way too easy in cold weather and no load. The bad smoke at startup seemed to go away. I left the radio tuned to Oral Roberts overnight. I think it healed itself...:D

Precup IDI engine. As Heath Diesel explained it to me the other day:
Light throttle has very little heat in the precup. Coolant takes the heat away fast. So you get the rattle of cold ignition.
Step on the throttle and you put more heat into the precup. The rattle goes away. The above can be used to time the engine by ear. 45 MPH light throttle should rattle. Step on it and the rattle should go away. This is a properly timed DB2 by ear...

Aces, do you have to add oil between changes? Worth doing a compression check?
