this my answer to a problem i have with spilling fuel, additives, oil, etc. you can use towels/rags
DSC01710.jpg

but the fuel always seems to get somewhere, here it is on the side.
DSC01711.jpg

i looked up funnels and came across some good ones but prices were out of my range, $30.00 each plus shipping. there is also the makeshift style,
DSC01707.jpg

the kind that tilts and rocks when liquids are poured in along the edge instead the center. there is also the slow pour/flow rate where arms get tired from holding multiple jugs for minutes that seem to turn into hours. i have several 15 gallon barrels that i like to use, they are easy to move, load, fill, etc, without the use of anything but a strong back. since i needed a way to fill them, no cash to spend and a lot of barrels, i used the barrels themselves. money spent was $5.00 with enough pipe to make 2.
cut barrel about 8" at the top, used circular saw. cut same from middle, use remaining bottom for another project. using heatgun, soften edge of one half of middle section and slip it on the top that has been turned to around to form a funnel. looks to hold 3 gallons. when cool, drill 8 holes in a way that the 2 pieces will be held together mechanically, i used stainless hardware, each has screw/2 washers/nut.
DSC01709.jpg

the inside will have enough screw/bolt to hold a screen that will have a mesh filter on top, using stainless again. screw 2" pvc connector with slip fit pipe end,
DSC01715.jpg

cut 12" pipe length desired,
DSC01717.jpg

slip together, i used no cement.
DSC01722.jpg

heat/soften bottom of funnel slipping it over a barrel,
DSC01723.jpg

heating and slipping screwdrivers, allen wrenches, torx drivers,
DSC01725.jpg

anything that will pull it away from barrel. when enough are in place, cool with water using water hose. when cool, remove screwdrivers. funnel will look like this
DSC01726.jpg

and will slip over your barrel with a tight fit and not slip off and best of all, no more spils.

any questions, ask. i will use this when i mix my fuel, wvo/RUG/cetane boost/kerosene.

i'll put some pics of it in action tomorrow. i looked at it again and even I was confused.

Must be the hillbilly in me cause I got it! The pipe sticks down into the drum u r filling up, the top of the barrel is inverted with the pipe in it with the middle cut of the barrell heated and softened and stretched to be bigger on one end and the other end is not stretched so it slides with some effort over the inverted top and is bolted so it wont move then all u do is slip the stretched end over the barrell with the pipe goin into the barrel. I think it would be improved if u deleted the middle piece with the heating and stretching and bolting and just cut the top off the barrell and put the pipe in the top and put straight pieces of metal sticking down like legs to keep the funnel from tilting to one side or the other. That way the y would act like legs to sit the funnel down without the pipe hitting the floor and u could have like a coffee can to sit it over for the pipe to drip into. Kiss principle or hillbilly lazy ass engineering!!!! LOL Hmmm maybe cut strips off the old chopped up barrel and use them for legs.

Still need the pictures. I used an 5 gallon water bottle with the bottom cut off for my big funnle.

David I have a 275 gallon tote you can have.

Thanks for sharing. I need to make myself a big funnel. I dislike the new can spouts they are cumbersome and too slow. I would rather just pour it in a big funnel. Orrum you are right its no fun holding 5 gallons of diesel shoulder high pouring in a tractor. I can't see how the new spouts are so much more environmentally friendly. You really need to seal the fuels of day to minimize air exchange to store it anyway.

i will get some more pics but orrum is EXACTLY right. he has it figured to a tee.
the tote is tempting but i have several 15, 55 gallon barrels, a 100 gallon tank and a 230 gallon tank, enough for over 1000 gallons of storage. don't really have the room right now. but i have some blocks, pistons, pans and such i will give you if you want them. there is a good crank, good block and pistons that could make a good engine. block is a 599.

the only reason i used the middle of the barrel was because it would of gone to waste. if the pipe was shorter or middle section longer, it will sit on a catch can for drips. it is the most stable funnel i have used and the cheapest. glad you figured it out.
this design could be used for 55 gallon barrels in either plastic or steel because the surface is more flat. also think it would be a lot more stable than the 15's because their surface is a weird shape. threads are 2" npt.

more pics.
side/top view of funnel mounted onto jug:

side view, funnel raised from jug, can see pipe:

completely removed, full view of pipe, jug with screw cap removed showing where pipe goes:

some polyethelene pipe i had in the garage, way in the corner. could have saved 3-4.00 if i had remembered. there is enough to make 20-30 pieces:
DSC01733.jpg

hope this cleared the mud.
this is a screen i will finish cutting and tack together. this will set on top of the bolt insides and will hold the mesh filter in place or i might just lay it on the bottom, depends on how much work is involved:

I see now and thought thats what was going on.

Below is a filter set up I tried, it was to slow so I removed the filter and just used the water bottle as a funnel.

095.jpg097.jpg096.jpg098.jpg

It was very slow though. If I only processed 10 gal at a time maybe, but I was doing 55 gal batches at a time.

running some used oil to the cf. have vid/pics later. feed is a little slow but the oil is room temp. using the funnel i made although i don't need to, there is a drain that fits in the spout pretty good.

here are the cubies. i will say 20 gallons, the other is in the shop, but they are really only 4.8 gallons each. oil was pretty clean looking so wasn't really expecting much.

on the table, hooked up to the pump:

after 5 gallons:

thick sludge:

DSC02131.jpg

took about 30 mins to run 5 gallons.
need to get a better way to feed oil to cf. have some valves so i can control flow. might gravity feed as soon as i figure out where to put the jug.

Interesting Deejaaa. Glad u found a supplier for veggie oil.
not really. someone gave me this. i will repay them when i find a supply. need to get a decent pump. both of mine(fuel pumps) clogged. getting a water pump, 110v, less than 40.00.

Those pictures bring back memories. One of witch, I had more cubies that I knew what to do with and was consantly sending them to the recycle dumpster, so I did not feel like I was wasting them in this process.
The process was to remove only the good oil from the top of the cubie.
I got some drip mist srinkler taps, hose and ball valves along with the little tool for puncturing the plastic tubing (getting the idea yet) I would use the tool to punch a hole right above the sludge line on the cubie then stick a tap with hose and valve in there real quick. That would drain either through some coffee filters or right into the centrifuge. With the valve I could bring it down to a drip.
This worked very well for me, but the cubie is trash after that.

Also cubies are not UV resistant, so dont store them outside or you will have a mess.
