Actual, honest, real world MPG from your 6.5

I did do a fair bit of work on the truck that required some idle time.

My drives are also short and the truck never seems to get up to full temp.

But;

I suspect the fuel tracking program I'm using right now is causing and issue. It has to due with how it calculates fuel used for miles driven....

I topped the tank off this time and so far I have 179 kms without hitting "full" yet. That 8.5 mpg tank only got 359 kms total....

Whew.... I am glad you are doing much better on this tank.... My chest started hurting when I read 8.5 MPG earlier....

Did a short fill tonight, 145 miles on 9 gallons. 16.11 mpg. Better. Advanced the timing a smidge, feels 'free-er'... HAhha. If I were to get new tires and get these POS cupped generic ass things off my truck...(came that way, still have a little tread)

well with my 95 with 4.10 gears. it dont make no difference what i do it gets 13.5 stop and go. and 16 on the highway. i put in the 195 stats. taller tires. i even slow down. no difference. i tried all the fuel additives i could find. no difference. but this truck will do what i want. its very strong. i think its the fuel. i tried truck stops and the co-op here in s.w. kansas. it varies very little. summer fuel a little better. diesel here is 3.89. and dropping . just my opinion

13.7 on the last tank.

Highest I've seen was a 15.2, but that may have been a recording error as the wife filled it on that tank and didn't write down the mileage or reset the odo. :rolleyes5:

Like mentioned above by viacase, it seems my 4:10 truck absolutely refuses to crack 14 mpg.

I need to keep the 4:10's to pull my 35 foot Travel trailer, so I've got to find alternate ways to bump the mpg. Besides, the 4:10's make it one fun truck to drive even if it does top 6500-7000 lbs empty......;)

Now, to be fair, my daily driving is short hops of 10-15 mins or so and the truck usually just gets up to temp by the time I get to work. Probably still running a bit into the "rich" cold cycle most of the time. The rest is around town, so 13.5 might not be that bad given the circumstances...

If you look at my sig line, I've also done just about everything you can short of tearing it down for a complete rebuild.

It gets stronger with every alteration/upgrade, but mileage is stubbornly refusing to move off 13.5-ish mpg.

Well, that's not completely true; it has no problem moving south of 13.5 mpg:banghead:

This next tank will be the first full one with Bill Heath's PCM tune, turbo master, vac pump removed, fluidampr and water injection.

It's kind of a hybrid tune from what he was saying on the phone.

Decent towing power and good mileage should result according to Heath. It's not really tuned for ultimate performance, that's not what I'm after.

I'd rather be able to rotate the earth under the tires instead of getting to the end of the 1/4 before everyone else or turning high speed.

We'll see if the tune lives up to the promise.........

installed the ATT last week after removing the GM3, and was able to keep mileage at a constant, around 66. drove a total of 614 miles on a tank. figured i'm getting 18.6 w/ the GV and the ATT. this is w/ 4.10 ratio. feels like i need to dial in the IP a little better though. don't know if that will affect mileage or not.

BJ, I'm really interested in your results from the Heath tune. Our rigs seem to be very much alike, 4.10s, etc. I'm getting the same result as you are. The best I've ever seen was one tank at 15.4 last summer and haven't been able to repeat it since.

Like I have said many times, all of mine with the exception of my new 93 have gotten the same #'s. People who claim 20+ MPG on a 4x4 3/4 ton 6.5TD I think are exaggerating. I have owned quite a few and none are any better except for some odd reason my 93. Now is it because of the DB2 ?? Or the 5spd Manual ?? Dunno.

GW, you don't list your tires in your signature. Like you, my 4.10 Suburban got 15-ish at best, more like 13-14 most of the time. But, with the 235/85-16's it came with I did better, topping 16 at times. The 265/75's are heavier and have more rolling resistance, not to mention the wider tires create more air drag.

Bill Heath insists on staying with stock 245's for best mileage, recommends commercial highway tires.

I did a mileage check last week on a trip i made up north. Was mostly highway and speed ranged from 60-65. Had 17.54 on that tank, but im starting to have cooling issues!! My gauge stays around 170ish!! I think my t stat might be sticking open... Still need to change it out...

Yup, the PO has slipped on oversize tires but I can't recall the size off the top of my head. The thing is. They're not even 50% yet.

Once they're burned out, I've got a brand new stock size set of BFG's waiting in the garage.

There still might be some calculation error in my mpg. Even with the corrected bash, the highway speed is off from the gps speed by about 5 kph...

GW, is your odometer corrected for the oversize tires? I validated mine with two GPS units and while the speedo is correct, the OD is off by 3% so I have to add that in to get correct figures.

My 1995 with the twin set up. 873.8 km used 97.5 liters last tank combined highway and city. Driving on the highway at 50-55mph though. Gotta drive really slow to get them numbers but it's worth it if your not in a rush..... I know the twin turbo set up helps with it as well. I tryed it on my other truck with the HX 35 and olny got just over 700 on my best tank.

25.2mpg city/highway for my last tank driving real nice. I'm guessing 27 ish on the highway alone.
i used to think my 96 was getting 22-23 mpg, until i got a gps and saw what my actual speed was. that brought it down to earth.

I checked my speedometer and it's with in 2 km. I was driving 100kmph on my truck gps was reading 98-99kmph. Keep in mind my engine quite a bit different then your guys engines. I'm just posting what I'm getting with the set up I have with how I drive.
