A little about our Project '70 Chevelle

Engine and trans went back in today.

We'll start buttoning everything up this weekend and get her ready to go.

Just waiting on the carb to get here.

Who' doing your exhaust coating? The hot pipes look galvanized.. or are they SS?

Who's the TIG welder, Tom? Welds look real good.
 
Once we see that everything is working as planned, running correctly and no major issues, we'll pull them back off and send them out to get JetHot coated. That's why we did it in sections with the v-bands, to make it easy to install and remove.

Don't want to do it before hand....that crap's expensive. Initially we'll cover it all in header wrap, but after that it'll all get coated.

Yes, Tom is the welder. I can't TIG worth a crap.....don't have the patience. I can MIG and stick, but Tom can do some artwork. When I say I can MIG and stick, what I mean is I can rudimentally stick 2 pieces of metal together. If it's gotta look good, Tom does it.
 
The last pair of headers I sent to Jet Hot, weren't so HOT. I can post pics. I thought they skimped on the coating before they put them in the oven. I mean, they looked *OK* but not what they brag about. They were a set of Hooker super comps that I welded O2 bungs and a few other mods. They were a new set with the black paint to start out with.

Ever used Jet Hot before?
 
I've never sent anything to them to get coated.....never had a real need to before this project. But with trying to keep as much heat in the pipes as possible, we don't just want to throw some high temp paint on them and cover them in header wrap.

After all the work that's gone into this, if those pipes come back not looking how we want them, you can be damn sure they'll be going back.

This thing is gonna be just as much a working show piece (mechanically anyways) as it is daily driver / race car.

Anytime we go to the track, events whatever, the hoods on my truck and his car are usually up for folks to see.....how ya gonna trust your ride to someone to work on when you don't see their own stuff.

I mean when ya tell someone that it's gonna cost them $10K to do this kinda work on their car, they usually want to see a preview of the finished product.....and what it'll do on the track and dyno.

Some guys are all secretive about their cars, their setups, their numbers, etc....whenever we go somewhere, the dyno sheets are in the window, the time slips are in the window and the hood are open to take a peek.

If a guys not willing to show off his work, keep walking.

So yeah, if they don't come back looking like the money spent, they'll be making a return trip in short order.
 
I had some headers cerama coated sent them back after 6 mos they recoated and in another 6 mos they looked like crap again. Hope you have better luck.
 
Now comes all ther "fun" little tasks.....

Brake lines, wiring gauges, etc.

Can't really do much until the new carb gets here, so all the little things that have been needing attention are getting addressed.

Looks really nice! Can't wait to see the videos, and finished product.

One suggestion though, get rid of that ugly elbow!! I would suggest something along the lines of this, that way it matches the pipes going into it............
 
Well, the beast came alive today.

Had to sort out a small exhaust leak at one of the v-bands. Due to the welding, it tweaked the angle slightly and it was too much to be compensated for by the band clamp. So, we had to make a small gasket for that.

Then, one of the o-rings on the -10 fuel lines coming from the regulator decided it no longer wanted to remain in one piece, so we had a small fuel leak to sort out.

But, all in all, it wasn't too bad. She lit up quick.

This is right after we first started it and is before the timing was set and the carb was adjustted, so it sounds a little rough and is running too rich.

I'll get more video when it's all buttoned back up and doesn't look like a mess.

 
We had it all set to go about about 30 mins later.

It looks like a rats nest in the video....we had it tossed together just so we could get it spun up and check everything out.

This week we'll have it all buttoned back up and on the road.

Hoping to get it on the dyno on the 15th.
 
Sounds like a beast.

Did you get the idle settled down? Sounded like in the video it was a tad lean trying to idle. Or you had a vacuum leak. Not to sound overly critical... I realize it's a fresh build.

Yeah, we had that settled down about 30 mins later.

We had justed started it and were giving it 5 minutes at 1500 RPM to make sure the oil pressure was good and it didn't have any leaks.

The problem with the idle was the timing wasn't set yet, it was just ball parked.

The carb wasn't adjusted either....mixture screw was way too far out and it was running way too rich.

It's all good now.

So here's the finished product.....well, the underhood portion.

We took it out for it's maiden trip this evening....OMFG!

Let's just say that the normal street tires on it now are useless. At 2 - 3 psi the rear end was coming unglued.

When the turbo comes up on it, it sounds completely insane. Even as loud as the exhaust is, you can EASILY hear the big Garrett over it.

And yes, there is a plan for traction control.

These will be on it for the track and we have a set of Weld's and ET Streets coming in tomorrow for daily use.

Um, better get out the bead screws for those slicks.

What class would you register now with the forced induction? Will it depend on ET?

Gotta remember, this is intended to be a street car, not just a track queen. This thing isn't getting trailered to the track, unless it's something out of state, staying the weekend, etc. The goal is to drive it to the track, bust out low 5's / high 4's on the 1/8th, low 9's / high 8's on the 1/4, and drive it home.

This car will get driven almost everyday.

The 850 is a CSU built unit, rated for 1400 HP as a blow-through. A Dominator would be great on the track, but the street manners suck. Also, 850 CFM is at atmospheric pressure and the motor pulling vacuum. Once you start stuffing it, those number go WAY up. We had a 950 on it before this and it would have been too big.

CSU prepped Holley 4150

And yeah, the wheels are getting screwed.

Most of the local classes here are based on ET's.
