97 Air Cleaner Assy....

Snorkle out and the new round box installed, my turbo whistle has gone away:sad:. I didnt go any heavy on the pedal on the way home, lotsa deer out here. I will se if she scoots better tomorrow morning. I also have pics and will post them sometime tomorrow night....

Well truck really feels the same to me. I fell no increase in power . I just feel like im not making any boost anymore since i cant hear the turbo. But i am obviously making the boost as my gauge states. I was also afraid of any road debris getting into the filter element since the inner fender is wide open now. My truck is severely rotted as you all know, so there are jigantic holes to light on the inside of the fender. I am also afraid water will get in there too. But it rained this morning, and the truck didnt skip a beat, so i guess its ok... DAMN RUST....

The purpose of this upgrade is to provide better flow than the stock flat box, while providing cooler, cleaner air than an elbo and oiled filter IMO. I wouldnt expect to see much of a power increase with this mod.

Now just think, that rotted fender gives you a cheap water injection system when its raining )::D

Pics. as promised....
CDR doing its job...
turbo master,.... a.. turbo-ing...

Looks better than mine!

I just "boxed in" my "hot air intake". Truck wasn't running as hard as it could when hot out. People advised losing my "hot air intake" but I couldn't find stock parts.

See attached pic. Don't laugh!

I had a piece of 3" angled pipe to extend air cleaner almost into the fender opening. I then used some scrap to make a heat shield around my sparkly new :rolleyes5: air box (left over aluminum flashing). A slit piece of hose gives it a finished look.

Still need to reroute my homemade ram air. That will provide a 3" air hose from under front bumper to the air cleaner in addition to the fender opening.

Does seem to run much better, but not the same as any early morning (or cool day) romp

BTW, why would it run sooo much better when raining?

so...can anyone tell me the filter used for the K47 box? Maybe an autozone number or something? Otherwise, I'm thinking of buying the 3" thick walled pvc, going to Autozone and finding a filter that fits the male end of the 90* fitting, and using some scrap metal to build a box. Is there any benefit or not to leaving the top of the box open? Also, would it be a good idea to build a small insulated or air space between the box and the turbo?

Well - here's my creation. The stainless steel came from a cutout of a countertop that we mounted a sink into. I was told to throw it away...but when do you come across stainless steel?I'm considering on maybe taking some scrap steel and spraying some rubberish compound on it and sliding it in, to provide some additional insulation from the turbo. Also, I'm slightly concerned with the open front, as far as water/debris being blown by the fan onto the filter. What do you guys think?

BTW - I can really hear my turbo/air flow now!! I seem to have lost my max boost in the first 3 gears, but the turbo spins up faster it seems. And I have whistle again! Oh, and it may have just been because I drove to and from springfield on one day and then to/from naperville today, but I calculated my mileage to 18mpg. I think that's a first too.

You are still sucking hot air from the engine compartment.

i just went from a ssds hot air intake back to stock and the truck really gained a lot more topend and lowend grunt especially with ambient temps in the high 90's

Here are the pics of the filter and elbow. Lowes did not have the black stuff, or at least thats what the sales idiot said. So to make it fit you cut the female part off???
Dieselslug the Lowes part number or what ever they call it there is 22774- 3'' abs 90 street elbow and it is black. I just bought one this week. Hope this helps.

well...so, do I have to enclose the filter so it's only drawing from the hole in the fender? Wouldn't that limit the amount of air being drawn in? Which is more beneficial...more air or cooler air that can only be found from the fender (without extensive fabbing to get from elsewhere)...

And does the blowby of the fan not help keep the temps in a reasonable range?
