97 Air Cleaner Assy....

whoever had my truck last stuck a K&N filter in there. now my maf sensor and whole air intake system and the blades on the turbo are covered in oil.

When i bought my 95 it had an afe that looked like someone dropped it into a pail of waste oil, then covered it with feathers and grass. I suppose the majority of the people who buy these "lifetime" air filters have no idea they have to be cleaned on occasion!

The above mentioned has pictures on the first page. Ill get some pics of the stock elbow as soon as I can find it

mine needed a cleaning badly. there were leaves and a lot of dust stuck in there. not to mention the metal that makes up the filter was coming through the mesh so it looked like it was pretty abused

From what I can tell, the 'oiled' filters don't work so well for the 6.5 - My burb came with a K&N. When I got it, I cleaned and re-oiled it according to directions, and then put in back in. What I noticed is that there is so much CFM air flow that it seems that the oil is literally pulled right off the filter and ingested into the intake.

Based on member's reports of the K&Ns letting all kinds of dirt into the system, I have retired the K&N and am sticking with my stock AC Delco paper filter. It works great.

I threw mine right in the garbage. Didnt even consider cleaning it...the mesh was all crushed in some spots too. Ive just been running a cheapo paper filter until i get this box set up.

Here's a pic of the factory 97+ elbo. This is the hard plastic one from the box side.

yeah ill be placing an order with ac delco for thermostats and i guess filter too. thanks high sierra for the pics.what do you think i should clean the maf sensor, intake elbow, and turbo blades with to get rid of oil.

HighSierra glad you posted that 97+ elbow. Thats why I choose to go the black sewer pipe from Home Depot route. My 93 has a slightly different coolant overflow tank so I can't say if it will work on 94+ trucks for sure, the elbow is close to the battery terminal but doesn't rub.

I have had no problems with it melting in the past 2 years but have only run in 95f temps., if it is a problem in hotter climates then a little tin foil wraped (or like) should solve that problem. Since the 97+ air cleaner housing is getting cool air from the fender and keeping inside a little cooler.

For those looking for a 97+ filter housings remember to get the transition from the filter housing to the fender they are also different from the flat to round filter housings. As far as mounting hardare needed for the housing I just lined everything up and just squeezed out 4 large poops of silicone and rested the housing on the fender then when the silicone setup I put one screw through the housing into the fender for good measure. It's very solid and hasn't been a problem.

If you have a light film of oil, you should be able just to wipe it off with a shop towl and some carb clean if needed. Make sure to spray the carb clean on the rag and not directly into the turbo. As for the MAF sensor, i dont know if theres anything on it that may be affected by solvents, so just to be safe id use only a rag/cloth.

tracy, i noticed when i test fit the box it was a bit tight for the tubes. If i have to i might scoot the battery foreward an inch by modifying the tray. Thanks for the tips

I'm running an AmSoil filter. It's a dry element that can be blown out with air. They claim it is good for a 100,000 miles. Seems to work well. No dirt in the turbo or anywhere else in the intake.

So what exactly kind of sewer elbow is that? Has it stressed under the heat any? Im thinking about getting the dimensons and going to intake hoses .com (i think thats what its called) to make one out of rubber...

Dieselslug,
If you need the elbow that High Sierra posted a picture of, I have one on a parts truck. That is the only piece of the assembly that I have, but if you want it, you can have it for the cost of shipping. I have no use for it.

That's what I did to mine. I put a short aluminum tube from the turbo hose and then used a short radius rubber elbow to the air box. It's a lot bigger than that stock plastic tube.

Dieselslug, if you havent bought an OEM one yet.... The black sewer pipe works perfect. I bought a 3inch elbow, one side female, the other male. The female side of the elbow fits perfect into the factory rubber hose off the turbo. I did have to build up the filter side with some electrical tape to get a little tighter fit. But the overall install was a piece of cake and the price was right. As soon as i can get some pictures ill post them up.

Yes please post pics when able. Yeah i bought the oem one, it really doesnt matter, i will use them all as a platform. I really want to make my own tube out of stainless steel. Got a buddy who does wonders with stainless....

I had some time to kill at Home Depot this morning waiting for my doors to get pulled.... This idea popped in my head.

I found the elbow, went outside and tossed it on. Perfect fit everywhere. Moved the truck back to the front (worked on it in the side) felt the same. Got the doors, and off I went.

Now I'm aware of challenging the way I think, and to prepare myself for placebo effect. Pulled out of HD, felt the same....

Turned off on a street, and placebo effect or not, once the engine got to 1600 or so RPMS (I drive in 3rd), the boost builds. Well, it builds fast and quicker now for sure!! With the same feathery pedal movements I drive with, once the boost builds, it builds faster and the truck pulls with no additional pedal movement so it seems.

Not only does the elbow get rid of that 120degree bend, which squishes the inlet tube. But it helps hold the entire rubber boot in a more non-colapsed position.

Comparing the factory inlet to the true 3" elbow, You must be DOUBLING the size of that opening. seeing it 'in truck' hides its faults alot. looking at it removed shows its faults hard.

Thanks guys for sharing this. Best 5bux I spent in a long while.

You would not believe this, i stumbled across the stock rubber section of the elbow for the round style airbox. SO i almost have the WHOLE setup 98 and newer with a k47 type air box. I even got the clips for it from my local junkyard... So what i will prolly do is try a bunch of setups with the stock, and i will go to the hardware store and get the black sewer pipe and try that on too. SO all i need is the stock elbow from 96td. I am now reading that the part inside the fender is diffe3rent too??? Well sall good cuz i bought the fenders too....:D:D:D

I used the stock (flat style box) rubber elbow for mine and it works just fine. Also, the clips from your flat box work on the round one as well. The plastic fender insert is deff different i believe. The one for the 97+ has more of a downward drop to the box. Ill try to post some pics tommorow

I used the female both ends 90 degree 3" sewer pipe, it was nice tight fit going into the filter but works well.
