6.5 injection pump timing wrench?

Thanks!

I'm just asking questions & trying to build up the courage & tools to tackle this...

Dam thing runs good smooth & quiet, ya think at 50yrs old I could leave well enough alone naaa that's just not me though lol

Before you start, MARK the pump at the top nut with marker or a punch, so you know how much you've moved the pump.

Ok I have the tools and will be ready to adjust it next weekend...

Right now offset = -0.18

I'm thinking of trying to target -1.85

What will the expected outcome be? I have read that this should net me some additional power, but I don't drag race the truck, so with the miles I run every week, 450ish think I will see a little better MPG?

Will it rattle more? It's very quiet right now, I have struggled with this decision & I'm still trying to decide if this is the right thing to do, can ya all help convince me?

Not sure about MPG but it will be louder, especially cold,

Do you have a scanner? Make sure its hot otherwise the TDC offset won't set.

Yes I have GMTD Scan Tech.

Excellent reminders scribing a mark before I move the IP and to warm it up first.

I'm guessing based on what I have read that I should not have to move the IP more then a red CH to get it to -1.85...:rolleyes5:

Thanks for All for the replies & sharing

You'll probably need to move it 1-2 mm, so just take your time. If you go too far, and it sets a code, you need to move the pump back, clear the code ENGINE OFF, then try again. I like to look at actual timing first, if its around 2.5 deg, you know your close, then do TDC offset.

He doesn't have our overcomplicated troublesome electronic injection that works only when it wants to.

):h Fixed it for you.

I only have the mechanical troubles without the electronic PMD, etc to also go wrong.

You won't regret doing it, should be a slight amount more power. What you will notice is better starting and a more responsive accel.

WAY better starting. And I've never had starting issues.

Cold starts fire RTFU.

It sounds different at cold startup, but not so loud like people are talking about, just a different rattle for only a few seconds or so.

I havn't started it sub zero with -1.94 however, I was at -1.32 all winter.

Worth the mod time for sure though.

I prefer electronic injection, because I can make it whatever I want at any time in any scenario, Im not confined to the mechanical advance limits. Same with fuel rates and the vacuum turbo control anticipates fuel delivery changes rather then reacting to putting more fuel in.

Fair enough the DB2 vs. DS4 is like a fuel injection vs. carburetor debate.

Well a member friend from another site I hang out at Harleytechtalk . org mailed me a wrench to use, but when it arrived it was 9/16

That inspired me to just go ahead & bite the bullet...I normally keep my vehicles for a good long while & I would really like to find a nice Tahoe 6.5 someday, so yea like ya said now I got em

I'll let ya know...it's always been pretty responsive ever since the OPS was replaced not to mention some of the other little tweaks that have been made :)

These engines are good like that... little gains are noticeable...

Mine really seems to be hating the heat lately.. feels sluggish compared to the cool mornings... I think ATT may help!

I adjusted my IP pump today and wasnt as bad as I expected. Didnt have to invent a tool either. I just used a straight 15mm ratchet wrench that I had on hand and loosened the 3 nuts. Had to make very small turns, but is doable. To turn it, I put a 3/8 bolt in the adjustment hole and used a small pry bar, then tightened the top bolt.

Now, I have to give you guys the credit, I didn't know what the heck I was doing before I read this forum and others. I was trying to turn the whole IP by hand, before I realized there were 2 holes to put the adjustment tool in to.
