1995 K1500 Burb "Big Momma"

a starter and alternator later she's back on the road.

Make sure your tach is still accurate as GM's infinite stupidity used a larger diameter pulley on a lower RPM diesel to charge two batteries. A gas engine pulley on the alternator will read fast. You might be able to still get your core back and pulley swapped if needed.

There are several threads of using a larger and better alternator than the noisy firecracker edge of the thermal envelope GM abused their customers with.

Get under the rig and make sure the rear brace is still on the starter. Trust but verify because if it's missing it can snap the corner of the block off.

IMO this was a shotgun approach as both generally don't fail at the same time. Why not new batteries while they were at it? 🤔

A few updates for the old girl:

Added 2 inch spacers to the rear.

I found a massive garvin rack on marketplace for cheap. Must have gone to an h1 or something bc it was 72"x79" and all beef. 1000013467.jpg
I got chopped it down and got rid of a lot of cross bars. It still probably weighs 60+ lbs.

Mounted the spare up top to free up some cargo space.
1000013625.jpg
Made the fairing out of 1/8" aluminum. I'm not 100% satisfied, but I'll live with it1000013631.jpg

I have had thoughts of getting the bars from a suburban and mounting them atop of the CC, then adding a rack toooit.
Biggest thing would be if it would make wind noises.
I've been wanting the same thing. keep going back n fourth with this idea or getting a full ladder rack and having it extend over the entire cab of the CC. of course I would also need to put some kind of support under the front end of it. that would make a good base for an overland camper!

Thinking I’ll call auto salvage tomorrow and see if they have a nice set and for how much.

I've used the same ladder rack I made for the single cab near 50 years ago.

It only extends halfway over the crew cab.

Gotta pic we could gawk at ? 🫣😹
Today at work, was so busy, didnt think to call auto Dismantlers to see if they had a roofing rack and fir how much.
And @jrsavoie what method did You use to fasten down Your roofing rack on Your CC.
I am thinking those expandable blind nuts but I imagine it would also require some kind of a UV resistant sealer embedded into the blind nut.

The Ladder rack doesn't fasten to m the cab. It just sticks out over the cab.

There should be a picture someplace. I'm not sure where. The truck is in the shed Still awaiting me to install the Fluidampr. Fuel pressure gauge & exhaust. The truck is.behind the backhoe and lawn mowers on the list right now. Everything is behind the coming ablation. The aneurism has me nervous. They said they are just going to monitor it for now.

There's no good way to get a picture of the truck in the shed.

Okay, I now see what the ladder rack is.
I hadda brain phart and could not remember just what a ladder rack is.
I was thinking on the lines of having a luggage rack, like atop of the Suburbans and mounting one of those to the cab of my CC pigup truck.
And then ladder rack was mentioned and my thought was having a ladder that attached to the suburban style luggage rack so a person could climb the ladder and place items on the rack or remove them without having to stand on the rock guard/open door of the truck to pile stuff in and deag it back out. 😹😹😹😹

I have seen aluminum ladders on the back door of a burb before. I think they might have modified one from a RV or somesuch.

Yeah, ladder on off roading/ camping rigis crazy useful. Take measurements and shop around. Takes a while but you’ll find what ya need usually.
Occasionally have one built custom for $250ish.

Of course- post biden economics who knows? Might take the Don a minute or two to fix this dollars…
