1500HD vs 2500?

What is the difference if they both have 6.0? :???:

any suggestions on year? i noticed kbb has big difference in value from 2000 vs 2003 models.
 
Nothing really but marketing. If you look GM either offered the 1500HD or the regular 2500 NON HD, but never both in the same year. they are both 8600 GVWR ratings I believe with the 9.5" semi floater 14 rear axle and MOST had 3.73 gears with a few having 4.10's. It was all marketing basically. Now the 2500HD is a completely different truck from the NON HD 2500 or 1500HD.
 
X2. They are the same truck. IIRC the 1500HD could be had as a crew cab where the 2500LD couldn't. Those would be the only kind of "differences" there would be.
 
I am looking for a resonably priced crew cab truck. Found a 2000 model K2500 CCSB 6.0Lgas locally with 144k miles. Black with gray cloth, recent tranny rebuild, used so some scratches, $8,500. Thoughts? What should I look for? Any 'typical' problems? I'm going to see and test drive either Friday evening or Sunday.
 
Unless it's LOADED, I would say the price sounds high. Theres DURAMAX trucks out there now for that kind of money.
 
Really? I have been looking around here and the only thing diesel anywhere close to $10,000 has 300k miles and/or it's 6.5L or old 90s Ram.
 
License plate fees can vary between 1500 and 2500 ratings.

I had a '99 GMC 2500LD ECLB for awhile and my previous employer used several hundred of the 2500LD trucks over the years they were built. Pretty reliable. Some had pretty serious cold start knock noises, but it didn't seem to affect longevity. I had to replace the tranny oil cooler lines on mine (under warranty), they apparently were prone to leaking at the connections.

They have the auto 4x4 transfer case that takes a special GM fluid. I would try to make sure that whatever service was done, they used the right stuff. If it has a sliding rear window, make sure it hasn't leaked, they were prone.
 
X2 on getting a DMax for that kind of coin but as to the 2000 2500 SCLB, I had one for about 55k ( bought it in '01 with 22k on it). 6.0 - 4L80, auto transfer case. I had few problems with it except the always annoying (& embarrasing sometimes) cold start knock and the throttle plate sticking at around 60k. There is a OEM proceedure specified for that but I had my own proceedure that worked well. Truck was very reliable and plenty of beans but 14 mpg on a good day makes it a bit spendy to feed. If you do decide to go that route, let me know because I have a full 4 book set of factory manuals for it.
 
Thanks for the input guys. I guess trucks are just high around here. I may have to shop GA and FL a bit. I'm even considering at 5.3 1500 crew at this point. There are a few 6.0s within 2 hours of here on CL and the range from 8,500 to 18,000?? Cheapest 2000+ year model diesel I have seen in a crew cab was with a ton of miles and still 14k. Maybe I just suck at searching...:hihi:
 
Prices do vary quite a bit for the same vehicle depending on where you are. For example (personal experience), a decent condition early 90's Cherokee in Missoula, MT area run around $2,500 to $4,000. In N. Idaho/Spokane you can get the same vehicle for $900.

Cool. Thanks. I am waiting to go look at a 2004 w/ 176k on it right now. Highway vehicle w/camper shell. I am more worried about type of use and service history than miles as long as it's under 180k. Anything I need to look for? From everyone's comments and what I have read elsewhere they are tough, long lasting, trucks.
 
Only 1500HD's I've ever seen have been CCSB's. I think it was kinda the first crew cab option for "half-ton" trucks. Only reason I'd get a 1500HD is to get one with Quadrasteer. ;)
 
How good is that quadrasteer stuff? I have only seen it in person on the old Honda Preludes and it scared me. I was worried about future problems with the system.
 
Drove one with 130k a while back and it was great. No real known issues with the system, keep clean fluid in the system and give'r hell. Turning radius of a Honda Civic. Only bad thing I've heard about 'em is that people smacked into cars in tight parking lots due to how tight the back end turns in, lol.
 
It has 3 modes, 2 wheel steer, 4 wheel steer and Towing, where it uses the rear steering to avoid your trailer "tail wagging the dog" to your truck, as well as the normal 4 wheel steering stuff.
 
I have heard reports all over the place on the fuel economy on these things. Everything from 14 to 18mpg. Any real world numbers out there? Also being told that a 5.3 CCSB 4wd will get 20+?
