I've seen that truck pull in videos, and it is impressive. However, that guy has to be an idiot for not having a guillotine on it. Every diesel pulling tractor in every class except farm stock is mandated to have one at all of the pulls that I have gone to. That was a 6 figure oops.
Not just driving style and intended use- transmission, tire size and gearing are very important. Chris has given info on turbos that are very good all-around options.
I think having to provide a warranty would stop them cold. As far as I know, the Army just buys another engine and throws a broken one away (or has their mechanic fix it).
Take the GMx turbos and sell them to someone with a 2.0 four banger who can use them. IMO, a 12cm housing hx35 is too tight, and a 14 only slightly better (gearing and transmission are big factors here). I have 4.10s with an automatic, and when I can afford the right hx40 it will go on my truck.
My 6.5 came from Ted's (late '15,early'16). It is an '07 military motor (n/a). All I did to it was swap the oil pan and install my pump, injectors, intake and exhaust. 30k hard miles so far.
What they're selling since then, I have no idea.
Just my personal experiences here. Not trying to prove anything or make any claims as to what works best.
I run a 130gpm pump with a 190 GM thermostat. I start my truck 5-6 minutes before I leave for work (even in summer). I climb a mountain 1 mile from home and usually am moving pretty good up...
Not a GMT400 or a 6.5, but life isn't fun all the time....
New rocker panel is on the way, new cat-back exhaust (first attempt at building one), new brakes lines, and a lot of Fluid Film on the frame.
Those fender flares seem to be like the ZR2 units. I almost guarantee that the studs on the flare will snap off (not that it matters since you're replacing them). I have to get a new set for my little truck once I finish excising the cancer.
Stoney, something has to be unhappy in there. I have the same w.pump you do with a Duramax fan and a 180deg single thermostat. My truck will run up to about 180ish before the thermostat opens, and then will usually run about 170ish even at 95degrees outside with the a/c on. Towing stupid amounts...
What?! 90 is a beautiful road! But I did notice that once you're off the the interstate, things deteriorate quickly- thinking of Big Timber out towards the Natural Bridge area (Boulder River).
TRB, if you are not afraid to tweak things yourself, the FIRST thing I would do is remove your new fan clutch. Look at the tab on the bi-metal spring where it anchors into the aluminum housing. It will be 1/4-5/16" long. Straighten the tab out and bend a new one that is about 1/8" of an inch...
