zf-6

i have seen eather a 4500 or a 5500 that had a zf6 in it dont know if it was 2wd or 4wd but i want to think it was a 5500 4wd but am not sure it was a long time ago that i saw it

here a while back i change the fluid in dads 01 dmax with a stick and with only 35k or less on the pickup the fluid sure smelt burnt. has anyone else notice that?

Yeah, this tends to happen with the old type fluid they were using in the 6-speeds. Transynd or Torque-Drive from Amsoil is a good replacement.

That's pretty close to what I get empty. I think the biggest factor in my mileage is the LB7.

I get 19-20 every tank, but I don't have a lead foot.....not too often anyway.:biggrin5: 10-12 mpg haulin' horses or RV. I definitely think the ZF does out tow the Ally though. I've been in both with same conditions and load.....yeah, definitely better.

Easily,my Dad has an Ally and my buddy has a Dodge and that Dodge auto sucked. It's fully built now and is a lot better though.

maybe so, never tested it. but the ally sure out tows any other manufacturers slush box!

I would have to say that the ZF is the best choice to use the torque of a diesel. because if you think about it a slush box works on fluid power transmission and as we all know there is alot of effeciency loss that way. 2 identical trucks except for a ZF in one and an Ally in the other bone stock the ZF will put more HP and torque to the ground. that is the bottom line.

out of curiosity what do you find to be the attributes that the zf has over the alli for towing? My neighbor has a new dodge, and a little farther down the street one has a ford. nice trucks but both their auto's are nothing compared to the alli.

i always figured if the auto was so good for big loads it would be in over the road trucks. gotta say i do enjoy the ease of driving an auto in traffic jams.

To start with, like ZF6 Man said they put alot more to the ground. Mine put 287HP to the rear wheels stock and 510 pounds of torque. An Ally won't touch those #'s. With the Ally towing our 22' and 24' cattle trailers it downshifts on hills and and looses some speed unless you redline it. My ZF6's will pull the same hills with the same load all day in 6th and never have to run high RPM's. The only time I have to downshift is when I'm towing 25K and pulling a big hill I'll grab 5th.
