Your opinion on 6.5 Turbo Motor Home

Hey TS you found THE place for 6.5 wisdom majority of us have 10+ years of 6.5 ownership under our belts, & know more about the 6.5 than any dealer tech ever did know about them. Got some good guys to help you with your DMAX as well, now you have to play on the sellers lack of knowledge and get price down, tell him you heard the 6.5 has an IP so bad it had a special warranty on it to cover 120K miles or 11 years, and your afraid of that, also you heard they are prone to overheat under load, both are true statements but we know how to make that be a non issue, plus we know of a few tricks to get more power out of your 6.5 and maybe some +mpg as well.

See if you can't get him down on price by about $1500.00 and that will pay for ALL of the needed upgrades to make this THE BEST engine preformer for any truck, motorhome, ect.

Comp reflash, full 4" exhaust. cooling upgrades, and a few tricks you'll find here, will make that motor Hum!

I would say the main concern would be running hot. These engines can run hot very easily. I would take a good look at how much air is availible to get to the engine. If it's anyworse than a standard pickup you may have issues particulrly towing. I have owned a few Class As (older gassers) and they all had cooling issues cause they just cram too much in one place. That is what I would look at.

The only motorhome I personally have seen with a 6.5 had 2 sets of electric fans; one in front pushing air into the AC+rad, and another on the other side pullung the air through. I asked if it was overkill, but he said it was worth the peace of mind, and that the AC worked better that way. Cool.
He had LOTS of room to play with, wish I could remember what kind it was, ie winnie, pace, etc.

I'm reading all the good replys. I won't be able to get to the dealer until Thur to check out all the stuff you've given me.

Thanks
TS

Matt, A list of acronyms... a trouble shooting guide... What haven't you guys thought of? I'd bet you know what my next question will be before I do.TS

Talent Scout, welcome to the club. As for your next question, You'll eventually encounter some Service Engine Soon (SES) light issues. Maybe even want to check for stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) as you come across that part of the "add a 6.5 to the stable" list...here's the sticky for the definitions of OBD1 and OBD2 plus more data. Like Matt said, paying in forward.

TS- If you end up not buying it, pass the info on to this list. Someone here with a longing for another 6.5TD might give it a good home.

To the others- Is this a common configuration for an old 'bago?

For a few years, in the mid-90's... there aren't too many of them around. It was cheaper for them to build gassers, and back then, few people knew how to fix the issues the 6.5 had.

The guys around here - yourself very prominent among them, OHT - do.

It's surprising how many large (up to around 30-35 feet) motor homes
have gas engines, even today - If I were in the market for one, I don't
believe I'd want to pay the fuel bill for a 454 or a 460 pulling 12 or 15,000
pounds around the country

I agree. I looks like the manufacturers of MHs don't like putting diesel engines in class c motor homes for some reason. I'd prefer a class c, 28-30', diesel, but they don't seem to exist or are hard to find.

Initial costs are higher on diesel. By a lot. I think its a 10-12000$$$$ dollar option brand new. Thats alot of gas. Especially considering most of them always have really low miles, such as the one in discussion. 11 years and 19,000 miles. Gasser would still be ahead, cost wise.

TS , A bit of an after thought , but it might not hurt to check out an RV forum for comments on the Motor Home . They may come off on the negative side re motor as they are not 6.5ers by & large I would think . So best to temper their comments with those on this site .

Awwwwww...... too bad, my friend. When we were looking for motorhomes, we lost 4 of them by just not getting to them fast enough.

Good deals don't stay put for long!

Whoops

Good deals don't stay put for long!

Having bought over 50 vehicles, and sold most of them, It's a very true statement.
I always counsel anyone looking for a GOOD deal, check 'em out asap, but if you have to wait, (to bring wife, etc.) put down a refundable deposit that gives you right of first refusal. If another buyer comes while you're gone, you can meet his offer or refuse, and let it go. Not all buyers are game to this, but cash is king, and I've beat out other buyers with their checkbooks open, with my cash at a lower price.
Not to rub salt in it, but; you snooze you loose.
