do you get better fuel mileage in the winter or the summer (HAND CALCULATED)and what is the reason for this .I noticed that my truck does better in the winter 17.3 vs summer 16.5...avg...cooler air maybe .I definitely have more power in the winter .

All depends on where your located. I was in Northern NY for the past 3 years and my city went from averaging 17mpg to 13mpg. There reason why was cause the truck sits and idles so much. When the temps are below 0 the truck tends to high idle more often and just letting it idle so it's warm when you get in it.

Boy I sure don't... 17-18 summer and 15-17 winter. LLY and LBZ You will get better mileage in cold weather with the radiator cover on.
Welcome to The Truck Stop! BTW:thumbsup:

I'm already noticing my MPG's are going down from Winter being here.

The High Idle in the Mornings & at Night don't help much either.

ok so what you guys are saying is that most of your mileage drop is the winter fuel blend and the fact that you idle more .my mileage is checked from gas station to gas station oops(diesel) on interstate 40 between ft smith ark and ok city.best ever was summer no mods 17.3 and I was empty and babied it too..now I am loaded 2500+lbs and get 16.1 to 16.3 summer and am now getting 17.3 with the cooler weather .the warmup is already done before I fuel up on my little miny trip..LOL

Could that be because you are running the A/C during the summer and not during the winter?

n2Dmax: I did not notice where you are from. Do you live in the North or the South? The winter fuel contains less BTU's than the summer fuel does. For us who live in the North, that means less fuel economy due to the fuel being cut with D#1 or kerosene, etc. in order to try and prevent gelling. In the summer, we all get the good #2 diesel that contains more BTU's than the winter blended fuel. It all depends on your location. If you are still running straight #2 and you have cooler temps, then you could see a little improvement in fuel mileage, but for most of us, that is not the case.

On a side note, Bio diesel also contains less BTU's than does #2 diesel.

arkie in Oklahoma city that is where I am at .been workin here for 2 yrs and driving back and forth to ark.I think that I am running #2 fuel and may have just recently got some winter mix????16.1 on same trip.my dmax definitely loves that cool cold air....LOL all my calculations are on the interstate only .not in town driving .Tend to get the heavy foot in town !!just cant help myself! in town maybe 13.5 if I am lucky.most of the miles that I put on my truck are on interstate 40.thanks for the info!!!!

Had to laugh at that! If you stomped on it in some REAL cold air (like 0* or below) you sure wouldn't like it!):h especially the part about throwing a code and going into limp mode.
Where you're at I'd be surprised if the winter blend has more than 10% #1...if not less.

ok ...just recently got some below 10 degree air and I see what you guys are saying!!!wow as long as it is 20 or above and no winter blend my truck seems to do better;I did stomp on it and no I really did not like it LOL,I think that I am fer sure getting some winter blend fuel now !!thanks fer the info .my mileage has definitely decreased lately!!

If you use a fuel additive, you can raise your cetane level and maybe do a little better on mileage and performance. Stanadyne, Power Service Grey, Amsoil, FPPFand a few others improve the cetane in the fuel to give a little better performance and prevent any gelling. You will have to experiment for yourself and see.

About 14-15 winter and 17-19 summer, but i go out and start her 20 mins before i got to go to work, and i always got the high idle on, but i would rather have her warmed up.
