Who has the best chip?

There ya go. I hate chip discussions.. everybody loves theirs :D

Probably because our trucks were all dogs before they got chipped, and we were all amazed at the difference!

Anyway, now you know... there are different ones out there, each with their fans - do the research and figure out who you want to trust.

Are you insinuating that you cannot trust some people?
I'm not sure if it is like this anymore, but before as stated there were some "hot" tunes that would cause damage to the engine. And I think there were some shops that had the ability to burn eeproms and such that didn't tune it very safe. But thats not really to much nowadays but i'm sure there are still some out there that I would not trust if I ever come across them.

No, Buddy, certainly not...

Just that when you go chip shopping, you get 40 different people telling you about their chip, and all of them LIKE their chips :D

So, you pick somebody you think you rely on most, for whatever reason you choose, and go with it.

Everybody's opinion is valid, based on their own experiences, and so everyone is passionate about their stuff. Like I said, that's why I hate chip wars - because everybody is right.

And whichever chip a person gets, they are going to be happier than they were before, right? That means next time somebody comes along, they're gonna hear from THEM, too!

Funny stuff. :)

Well-stated. Somebody was selling a Hypertech on ebay about a month ago... nobody knew if it was an old one (Danger, Will Robinson!!) or if it was something newer. Personally, it isn't something I would risk - they had a pretty bad rep back in the day.

You could also get chips from ANYbody who bought Lyndon's software... that could be risky.

The ones I listed are probably the most reliable.

Although Heath spends his time on it, he does have someone else make them, Z-industries. I wholly trust Heath tunes, but I think most people have the most sour taste of the vacuum wastegate actuator system because even if they get heath's tune it doesnt utilize that system to it strengths, because he believes in the turbomaster setup.

Yep - but then again, that's a matter for some deep consideration, too. Personally, I much prefer the mechanical TM-controlled wastegate - and mine WAS working properly before - from a towing perspective, nobody's tune I have yet seen effectively manages the interplay of IAT, EGT, Boost vs fuel needs at low speeeds under high load.

The turbomaster does.

While there are some things a properly-tuned vaccuum system is great for, towing isn't one of them.

For that reason (and there are others, and also contrary thoughts), the Heath tune didn't leave any "sour taste" with me. The day I ditched the Vac system I danced in the street. :D

Doesn't need to be lyndons software. There is other options available. I actually have one of them equipped with emulator so i can load new tables to computer while engine is running. and i really like my own chip..

Does'nt Kennedy believe in the Vacuum system also?

Also I was under the impression that Heath will do a tune if you wish to keep the vacuum system, thought I read that somewhere?

Cheers
Nobby

just got Heath GL4 last week.....so far has been great woke the burb up!!!.....i really like the shifts when you stand on it!!!!....

I have the GL4 and find it to work awesome with the mechanical wastegate. Now i dont know if any of the others have it, but the extended glow plug times programed into heath's chip are quite nice

Thanks for chiming in, kojo... I couldn't remember who the other guy was - I knew SOMEbody had done their own!

I'm glad your chip is working well for you - I'll add you to my list of 'everybody likes their own chip'... !

Or course the chips can be created without Lyndon's software - but not by just anybody... there is a considerable amount of technical expertise needed, as you are quite aware. However, with Lyndon's software and a ROM burner, anybody could do it, with no technical expertise.

THAT could be scary.

Certainly, if they wanted to experiment on their own truck, more power to them - but for somebody to buy it commercially (say, off ebay), I wouldn't trust it in mine. Can you imagine? I buy the stuff, and start making chips when I know nothing about the nuances, then selling them to people on here who assume that I must be smart enough not to damage their truck?

LOL... and we thought the early BD chips were bad for engines...

I have been on the diesel boards for a very long time and have listened to all the banter that goes on.

When I bought DaHooooley back in June of 07 (Truck is 95) it ran very good, well at least far different than any I had ever owned.

Turned out that it had a BD chip and had a Turbo master installed.

There were issues with that setup though. The BD was not set up to work with the TM and would set overboost codes and defuel when ya got into it hard.

Being a Mod over at the Page for many years I really dont like to stump any one product over another at least not on the boards.

I think that John Kennedy and Bill Heath have the two best products out there.
Now this is just My opinion.

I went with the Heath Chip for DaHoooley The one I have is the one just before the GL4
It works fantastic.
The truck runs like a scalded cat and thats the real deal.

The shifting mods are fine as is the driveability and the mileage is good too.

I would love to try the GL4 but I can't justify the $$$ at this time.

Just my thoughts.

I agree, messing with chips can cause bad damage if you don't know what you do and i can imagine someone who has program could make chips without any experience or knowledge, just turn all to max.. I bet chip like that could cause anything,, and i'm sure it wouldn't be nice to drive.
I have been making own chips long time and i started modifying glow tables (before heath started sell chip with extended glowtime) and i have done lot of testing for other tables after that and learned lot...

This is what i figuerdwoild happen. If I spend $500 on a chip that took someone 5 min to program I just want to put it in and say OMG! that was so worth the money.

I know its not the chip or the time it takes to program it that your paying for, its the R&D of the program it self.

I do have gauges and a home made TM I will update my sig.

Thanks for all the info. I now call an end to the CHIP WAR! Peace to all

I have kojo's chip. For latest version, we used 4 hours together on the road for testing and creating/adjusting fuel table etc. and I'm extremely satisfied.

I run a stock chip from the fine vintage engineers at GM. It works superb.

However, I wish it shifted into overdrive at 40 instaed of 45, and I could also use a little more shifting pressure into overdrive. I guess I just don't know what I'm missing.

Thats a mistype, I meant I wish the torque converter locked up at 40 isntead of 45.

X2 most of the roads around here are 45 and the truck is running at 2300 rpms at 45 and it wants to shift but i got to speed up to 50 to shift

The custom tunes will lower your lockup in OD down to 40MPH.
And yes you dont know what youre missing, you think you have a great truck now, but it is more impressive than you know.
