Which year cummins engine ???

www.fordcummins.com
All I gotta say...
I would do this in a heartbeat. JK Auto from DP did one and he used an intercooler. You can't beat a Cummins diesel. It is IMHO by far the best diesel out there. Too bad they couldn't get it right with the 8.3. What a POS that engine is. Amazing how similar they are though.
Orrum, the powertroke webfoot thing you spoke of was the F250s pre Superduty. Fords IFS sucked ass and could not hold an alignment. GM's holds alignment better but it's junk. Atleast with a ford a straight axle swap is a heck of alot easier..if yo can find one. I was looking into a straight axle swap for my Burb. I scoffed at the idea until I saw it first hand in Joey D's truck and at Valley Off road(he does them and the GM striaght axle can be used, just more work.) If I was considering a Cummins swap, I would go straight axle as well. I will say my Powerstroke out towed my cummins 24v. Cummins is a hell of alot stronger and easier to work on though. As far as using the 4l80e, Dodge trannys are junk. Get an adaptor kit and use a Comushift. You could do all this for less than the price of a new Motor from GM and it would be 10x stronger, just alot of work. Guys replace the 6.xx with 6.xx because it's a drop in easy swap but a Cummins conversion...Now your talkin serious truck.

If money were no object, find a 54 block or later(56 the best) 24v and P Pump it...Now that is serious....
the questions is what's better Cummin or strokin ?? :rof:

Kenny, its been years since I did all my Cummins swap. Does the 54 or 56 block refer to a 24 valve only? I have a 12 valve w/inline IP sitting in the shop, I think it was from a 96-97 truck. How can I tell what it is? Seem to remember CPL? tag?

Diesel Power Magazine had an article on the cummins motor. The 24V block has issues but I can not fin the magazine with that article.

I would just stick with the 12V motor. Only issue to keep or fix is the killer dowel pin.

Not all of the 24vs were bad but 53 blocks are more abundant. The KDP is an easy fix while the motor is out although a PIA in truck.

I have always wanted to do a Crew Cab 80's chevy 4x4 24valve p pump. When I had the donor trucks to do that with sitting around I was told that it wasnt worth it to use a 24valve. I was wanting a tow pig ~400HP (still want one) but I will play with my 6.x's until I get them all the way I want them.

95 cummins 2.jpg95 cummins 6.jpg95 cumms 7.jpg95 cummins 1.jpg95 cummins 4.jpg95 cummins 3.jpg95 cummins 5.jpgView attachment 28984I think I found a great candidate. Here is the ad. 1995 2wd 2500

This is a project truck with the 12 valve 5.9 liter intercooled turbocharged cummins diesel engine. The truck does not have the interior and electronic parts. Everything that is still on the truck works. The engine has 178,000 original miles and runs good, the oil was changed every 3000 miles. The truck will need to be towed but the transmission works so you can drive it onto your trailer.

I can get it for 1.200.00 Looks to be in good shape/the drivetrain that is.

The 1995 engine is basically identical to the 1990. Same block, head, pistons, etc etc. But the 95 should have the much more desirable P7100 injection pump on it, if memory serves me right.

The 95 is also intercooled, where the 90 isn't, so that's a plus....provided you can physically fit an intercooler into your chevy body.

From the factory the 1995 was rated at 160 HP 400 ft lbs with an automatic trans.

1,200 isn't really bad price, a good running engine alone will cost close to that.

I intercooler will fit with modifications. Ask Ferm he put one in his Suburban with the Duramax.

That is a good price. I paid $1200 for just one of the engines I used.
I'm starting my search for a local 4bt, if you guys find one ......
