Im a chevy guy so I know pretty much nothing about fords. I know someone with a 1996 F250 4wd with a plow that will probably be up forsale this spring without the plow.

I was wondering if these trucks had any problems? One thing that surprised me is she said it burns alot of fuel. I always thought these were easy on fuel, like 17mpg.

If these are good rigs I wouldnt mind having it. Id rather have a F350 because of the straight axle but the guy who had this one said he never had any tire wear problems.

The automatic transmissions will give trouble. Mine lasted about 175,000 miles, but it would act up from time to time. The engine is great 7.3 turbo diesel will run and run. Mine gets about 16 mpg daily driving.

If it has had a plow on it I would deffinitly check the front end over and the tranny due to use with a plow. But other than that we have gotten 200k-300k fairly trouble free with ours.

Yeah I had a 92 non turbo that I plowed with there unstoppable. Even if it needs the front send rebuilt its worth it, jsut worry about the tranny

My tranny gave up at 175,000 miles, put in a Ford replacement it lasted about 25,000 miles but it had a 3 year / 36,000 mile warranty so they are replacing it now.

my uncle had a 96(i think that was the year) f350 2wd cclb auto. used it to tow his camper that was about 9k. had five trannies in it total. first rebuild was stock from ford. the others he had it "built" stronger as he also put the banks turbo kit on it. still ate up trannies and only got 12-13mpg unloaded and about 8-10 with 9k hooked to it. he used to love that truck but it was costing a fortune to keep running. ended up selling it and getting an 08 eclb 2wd chevy 2500 6.0 with the six speed auto. that truck has been getting 15-16mpg unloaded and 12mpg with the same camper hooked up.... I get the feeling his was just a bad one though.

Unless I come into some money or see a good deal on a ford I think Ill stay with the 6.5. I like the engine and parts are a hell of alot cheaper then a ford.
