Cheezy website or not, looks like your lad got an authentic Optimizer from GEP.

There is no doubt whatsoever mine is the "real deal".

It came through a GM dealer and I've got the 3 year GM parts warranty to prove it.....

No, AFAIR it's a kind of ref # something like 125xxxx. I will call the mechanic so he can give me the engraved number. I'll take a picture ASAP.

oh, BTW, read "rocker cover", not "rocker panel" . Duh! :twak:

GEP engines do not have GM "punched" in the valve covers because they are not GM engines. They are GEP engines, which is a subsidiary of AMG. AMG owns the rights to the 6.5 design, they purchased the rights from GM several years ago.

GM parts has an agreement with AMG to source their replacement 6.5 engines from them. When you order a new 6.5 from GM parts, you get a genuine GEP Optimizer 6500.

The P400 is a casting number. It's still an "Optimizer 6500", but the lower block is a complete redesign. It's not really a girdle in the traditional sense, but a complete lower casting that incorporates the main caps. basically, completely different beast from the fire deck down.

If your "new optimizer" comes with GM stamped into the valve covers, you have been ripped off royally.........

Thanks for the pics. The engine which sits at the mechanic looks exactely like yours.

I don't remember where, but I read that if there is no GM logo on the rocker cover, it is possibily a chinese optimizer...

On the covers we have, no logo.
Numbers engraved are 12564564 on driver side one, wich is GM part # for the cover, and the passenger one gets the # 12564565 engraved

BTW, where is located the P400 casting number?

If you look at my first pic with the engine hanging on the hoist, you will see the "engraved numbers" in the picture.

More proof your lad got himself a bona fide GEP Optimizer 6500.

One thing is for certain; if the valve cover has "GM" stamped in them, it's not an Optimizer....
