What's involved in a thermostat replacement

I just purchased new thermostats from Kennedy diesel for my '99. I've had coooling issues in the summer when towing my travel trailer and now I'm seeing the gauge read just over 160 even after driving for an hour straight. Perhaps they are stuck open? Seems like a good place to start is with the thermostats. I was suprised to see that they were Prestone units? What is involved in the R & R process in terms of time? It doesnt' look near as easy as a SBC! Anyone have pics of the process?

Thanks

Lance

it is relatively easy i guess. drain the coolant or until it goes below the thermostat crossover. take off raddiator hose and bend it to the side.

i forget but i dont think you have to take the hose running on the passenegr side of the engine to the coolant crossover off but check. take off 4 bolts and the one side of the coolant crossover should be off.

put it new stats and reverse process

i forget though if you need to take the top intake manifold off though. i did this with a bunch of parts already off because of my glowplug injector install so it is all blending in my mind

There is probably a bleeder on top of the thermostat housing that you need to open when you fill it back up with coolant, at least there is on my 95 single tstat housing. This makes sure you get the air out of the system I believe. Also I don't have anything bad to say about Prestone stats but I had trouble with a replacement thermostat and when I switched back to the ACDelco stat my problems were cured. After that I will only use ACDelco stats in my 95.

I'm a little concerned with the Prestone units. Everyone mentioned the OEM AC Delco units but they were special order from the dealer with a hefty price tag. Kennedy showed the units as Robertshaw, which come highly recommended, even the invoice shows Rshaw. Should I be concerned?

So, can we add Prestone Tstats to the the list of "approved" ones along with Delco & Robert Shaw?

I am going to guess the Prestones are RobertShaws in a different box. I don't think Kennedy would advertise one product and ship you another. I'm sure everyone here has bought Stanadyne fuel filters in many different boxes. I think this is the same thing.

If you are concerned, call Kennedy and ask him.

its a robert shaw. I called and asked him when my Robert Shaw showed up in a prestone box. I can't tell you if they work well or not ... I had a catastrophic engine failure the next day....... will be putting an AC delco in after I am done building my new engine.

when I got mine I just went to a local parts store that handled ACDelco parts and they had it in stock. It wasn't cheap I think it was about $23.

Some info from google search reports at least some of Robert Shaw taken over by Cooper & marketed under Prestone name.

there not cheap but they work. when ever i get to 195 and im at a stoplight they open up and my engine immediently starts dropping in temperature. my other unknown thermostats didnt do that

Just changed my single T stat in my 95 with AC Delco 190, called every parts place within a 20 mile radius NO AC Delco to be had on a shelf NO where. Ended up ordering it from Rock Auto not cheap 32 bucs. My OEM temp gauge is now reading what appears to be 190, I'm thrilled, next we'll see what it does for my milage, I'll now that by the end of the week...:smile5:
