What to expect when you own an A-team turbo

SO I have been an owner since the beginning way back in 2007, My truck has about 40,000 on the turbo and it has saved me a lot of fuel dollars. I picked up 3 miles to the gallon on the highway originally and the towing capability was great. I towed 28,000 truck and trailer for a little over 1000 miles and averaged 11 miles to the gallon doing it. All through upper Michigan.

The truck has been a joy to drive and is much quicker and smoother all around. I never knew that the 6.5 could be such a good all around vehicle. Had one customer call me and tell me he put an A-team on his 35 foot motor home, which eh uses to tow his race trailer. Said he was a little skeptical about the fuel mileage claims but he said he went from 7 to 9 mpg towing the same trailer through the same routes. Said he was running a solid 12 pounds boost at most highway speeds and that the motor home was actually much better to drive. All in all I am very happy with mine. With the price of fuel going through the roof, the A-team should be able to pay for it self in a very short period of time.

The turbo has less back pressure on the motor than the GM turbo and averages approximately 1.2 to one back pressure numbers up to and a little above 22 psi. How is that relevant? Less wear on your motor and less heat load and stress on the mechanical parts. Looking to make this a little primer on what owners think of their turbo and how long they have owned their turbo. Thoughts on quality, customer service so that people know what and who they are dealing with.

I've had mine since Dec. of 08, I'm the second one to purchase and the first to install the retailed ATT.

I love it, mileage went up but with my driving style and filling from a bulk fuel tank I can't give exact numbers, rough figuring would be 1-2 mpg improvement going by the number of miles to the 1/4 mark. I tow 25-30k lb. loads and had one at 36k. It would never have done it previous.

I expect to bolt it on and 'forget about it'. Seriously it is one advantage as there isn't anything to adjust and no failures related to the turbo even when pushing EGT's past 1500. I did not expect to go down the road I did with the 1995. The 1993 has been more or less bolt it on and forget about it.

My original goals to get power in upper RPM where the GM3 chokes and clear up smoke from over fueling the GM3, have been met and exceeded on the 1993. I did not expect a fuel economy improvement with more power that I got. Going from ~7 MPG to 10.4 MPG with more power was impressive. I expected the same MPG or worse because power costs MPG. Same MPG with more power was realistic from the GM3 turbo master giving me more MPH flat out at the same MPG.

I also gained power by less cooling fan use because more heat left the engine out the exhaust, lower IAT's, and less work needed to push the exhaust out of the engine past the choking GMx.

The instructions were missing in my kit. Yet the only question for install was the oil drain tube modification. Support is there for the ATT even on unrelated questions. In fact the intake orange tube was replaced with a higher quality part to make the product better.

The kit is nice having all but the clamps for the install. 2 Oil drain line clamps and 2 intake clamps are the only other parts you need to get.

Other things you should do to support the ATT is a quick list and should be included. Like intake modifications: Remove snorkel if present, modify fender to airbox plastic if applicable, 4" exhaust, 4" converter if required (so far so good on my 1995.) turbo blanket and header wrap for the downpipe and anything else you have off that can be wrapped and a good tune to take advantage of the ATT. Your fuel injection system needs to be in good shape as the larger turbo will not keep problems hidden like the GMx tends to. A boost gauge is nice to have as well as an EGT gauge. Although I don't feel either are required.

I have been with Dennis on this project as one of the "test guinea pigs" since day one starting with the Mitsubishi TD07-22A that was the Genesis of the ATT chronicled in this thread (get some popcorn it is a long read) http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/showthread.php?2015-Replacement-turbo I have the 3rd production ATT on my truck, and liked it so well bought ATT turbo # ???? for my Burb.

The ATT is all that it has been advertised to be by Dennis, and getting better now that some serious specific ATT dedicated tuning is happening.

Gauges on my truck because of the GM-8 on it originally, and not required or installed on my Burb

What you get with an A-team Turbo is a bullet proof put it on and forget it turbo that you can swap over in a few hours. The install is straight forward and simple no moving things around or rearranging the battery, no waste gate to fail or springs to adjust. The turbo is built to use and be dependable. uses the factory air box, the down pipe is production quality, repeatable consistent specifications will be able to exchange between different vehicles with repeatable consistent quality. Not one of a kind production parts that only fit that one specific vehicle.

Once the install is complete you can remove and install the A-team turbo in less than a half hour from start to finish if you should need to do a valve cover or injectors. Just one of the benefits besides the fuel economy improvement.

I started to post this in the HX-40 thread but thought this would be more appropriate Ted aka member 635 visited us here on the coast unfortunately the co-ordination between driver & photographer did not work as well as I had hoped, Ted was hooking the grab bar one hand and trying to video with the other :) uploading to You tube as I type this, but here is a picture of static "hook up" on dry pavement with a slightly boosted (2 psi) ATT dual track mark launch, I really need to take this thing to the track and get some quality vids where I'm not endangering myself or traffic near by.

The 642 shows the "smokeless operation" of a ATT

643 shows a standing start non boosted "roll out" notice the lack of smoke

654 shows a standing start take off, keep eye on how fast boost climbs boost gauge is center gauge, no lag with the ATT on this truck

Dont do that Ray.
I believe that Your 6.2 can be turboed without too much work.

Oh I know, I have a used banks sidewinder system I picked up a couple of years ago. It's just $$ is tight now and I don't see things getting better anytime soon. I make good $$, but my Darling Bride spends it as fast as I make it. I'm getting close to retirement, I keep telling her I don't want to work 'till I drop. But, unless we hit the lotto...well, I wouldn't be the first.

I full well understand about the funding of projects. Mine wifey puts the brakes on some of that, She says She dont want to work forever to fund what I like to do. LOL
