i have a 1998 6.5 and it runs around 180 at all times. i have a buddy who has a 1996 and he runs around 220. is 180 too low to run? the temperature gauge works fine and everything

most run around 190 you might have lower stats. but your buddy's at 220 is too hot. this is assuming the factory gauges read right.

Send your buddy to this site for help to bring down his temps, or for help when he cracks his head. Experience talking here.

yeah that was my plan. when i see him tomorrow ill tell him to sign up here. yeah i dont think he will enjoy cracking his head. cause he just got it today lol

Welcome to you btw. Fill out info about your truck when you get time, and let us know about your rig more.

220 F in just regular driving is abnormal.

I would venture to say he either has a mechanical fault (water pump, thermostat, blocked radiator, cracked heads, head gaskets, etc) or the gauge (or sender) is incorrect.

My 98 runs right around 85 C, which is right around 185 F, once warmed up in daily driving.

The temp gauge on the Hummer reads a lot higher that it actualy is. I read 210 on the gauge and the OBD is 197 so a 13 degree diff. Helps me stay conservative and every know and then i check on the ODB to make sure.

Mine runs @ 190 no matter what I'm doing. 95F outside temps,, Both AC's on full blast. 70MPH or idle. BUT you MUST have the mod's to do it.
HO water pump,, Duramax fan, and HD fan clutch and CLEAN radiator/condenser/coolers. Good luck,, and Welcome to the TruckStop!

When mine hits 210F I start taking measures to lower it quickly.

Mine only gets that hot while towing, hills, summer heat of 100F+, and the motor has been running for a while and is heat soaked. Also while running the A/C. To lower it, I slow down. But, I keep moving. It goes down faster than it will go up. While towing I usually drive by my temp gauge.

I need a new fan and clutch. That money thing keeps getting in the way.

When I am not towing I never have any issues with high(er) temps. It usually sits at around 180F-190F.
