I have a new to me 1984 green sub. It's a Chevy, 4x4, 6.2l C engine. It doesnt appear to be taken care of too well though it still runs pretty good. I am trying to go thru this slowly and learn. I am having various misc problems with it, the most alarming being the maxed out high oil pressure! I got oil and filter to do a change today, but first am cleaning off years of gunk! In cleaning, I found this lose cord. The other end of the plug looks exactly like the pictured end and is actually plugged into something under the truck. I am assuming this lose one is connected to the plugged in one.....

that the plug for the block heater. check the left side of the engine just behind the motor mount. there may also be 2 heaters in there.

This is going to be the first time I change oil for "any" vehicle. Im doing it from watching youtube videos and reading posts online........ so take it easy with me haha!!! What is a block heater? When you say "left side" do you mean passenger side? Maybe I can find a motor mount and hopefully it will be the one you are talking about lol

the block heater is just like it sounds. the other end of the cord is a standard 3 prong household plugin. it heats the coolant for easier(and sometimes possible) starting in the colder months. the left side is the drivers side. the mounts are real easy to tell. just look for a bracket between the frame and engine.

as for the oil change, do it with atleast a lukewarm engine(the oil flows better) keep some rags handy when you unscrew the filter. make sure you fill the filter most of the way before reinstalling it. it saves that dry run deal(no oil) when you first start up. 2 more things to remember is to coat the filter seal with fresh oil and a quarter turn is all you need after finger tight.

Wow!! This is my first post in this group and what a GREAT answer I got!!!! Thank you!! Very informative!!

you won't need the block heater until you hit the single digits tempature wise. the glowplug light coming on is called an afterglow. perfectly normal. it comes on to finish heating up the cylinders.

welcome to the truck stop by the way. everybody does the best to answer all questions.

Welcome Canperbrat! Hey Just a Number welcome back urself! U seem to always get the newbies, u were the first to help my newbie problem.

Where I live the coldest it "ever" gets is about 13* Im thinking one block heater would probably be more then enough and since it bugs me having this dangling cord, I could maybe just pull and cut and remove it? There is another one that is plugged in.....

no u will eventually find where it plugs in, be patient the other might not work and u will need this one! These diesels will teach u patience and puzzle solving! LOL

add hair pulling to that list. I just seem to be lucky with the finding the newbies. hell I was one of them 6 years ago. just clean and scrape everything(you'll be thankful later) and you'll find it. the part that you see is just 3 pins sticking out of a small disc about 1.5 inches across.

Yea Camperbrat them hands are way to clean, diesel soot grows into the pores and has to wear off! Dive right in and scrub and scrape like Just A Number suggested.

Well u need to meet Missy Good Wrench then, shes a gurl too and one of the best mechanics on Gm engines so u aint gotta man up! Put ur truck up on ur signature so the folks can look at what u got and help u better. Go to settings @ the top left of ur screen and u will find where u can put ur signature in.
