is it suppose to be connected? 1995 Chevy 1 ton van 6.5L N/A diesel. Went out this morning for a coffee & the truck shifted really weird. The voltmeter showed a constant over charge & the engine mil light flashed on & off. Removing the dog house I found this wire off & following them they were both disconnected. Is it the crank sensor? Where is it suppose to be connected too? Is there a wiring diagram for this engine in here? Thanks

Since it is a mechanical injected engine it can't be a crankshaft position sensor. Is the connector the one on the top left of the center picture? Mechanical pump engines have 2 connectors that attach to the ip. One is for throttle position the other is for cold advance, high idle, and fuel shut off. If the throttle position sensor is unplugged or not giving a signal to the pcm[computer] it will shift hard and not go into overdrive and won't lock the torque converter.

I figured it out. It was an add on when the van was new. It was owned by the City. They had a hour meter on it. I think that was wired to a oil pressure shut down relay. that's why it is disconnected. The voltage is high today 18V. It does shift hard especially from first. The tranny has just been replaced. I wonder if the TPS is adjusted correctly.

I would fix the over volt first. Otherwise will cook your batteries and burn out every lamp on the thing!

I suspect the engine to frame ground strap has issues or is disconnected from the trans swap. Otherwise get the alternator out of there and test it specifically the voltage regulator. Something may have fallen into it and shorted it as well. Be careful of the pulley size as diesel is different and drives the tach. Just have yours rebuilt as a diesel electric shop.

Pull the codes out of the computer. This will give you more info as well. But high voltage will FUBAR the best computers. So take any codes as a possible result from over voltage.

Ok how do I set the TPS? Maybe that is why my transmission is shifting hard. Check the alternator tomorrow.
