what blocks to stay away from

There is no guarantee on the blocks. Our 1995 Suburban had a 929 or 141 block (can't remember). This block is from a 2WD Suburban with 185,000 miles basically used as a daily driver by my wife, never really worked hard in its life. We are the original owners, so I know the history from new. The second main saddle is cracked all the way up to the cam bearing on the right and on the left into the bottom of the cylinder. A couple other smaller cracks on other mains as well. Incidentally, the crankshaft mains & rods still measured at factory specs.

It was replaced with a used 506 block with oil squirters. I removed the pan on the 506 block and could find no cracks. One would think it should be the other way around, so you never know.
