Last summer I purchased a 1996 Jeep XJ Cherokee sport. It has big miles and is tired, but there is no rust. I found it on Craigslist in CO for the right price.

Anyhow, Now I've been thinking of a diesel conversion. I happen to already own a brand new 6.5. It's on an engine stand in my shop. Although, I was thinking of saving it as a spare for one of my 6.5 vehicles. I was looking at a Cummins 4BT, 800lbs. Also, I was thinking of a Detroit 2 stroke 3-53, also heavy and while cool, the 2 stroke has to run with high rpms to get the power. There are smaller diesels like the VW 1.9, smaller Cummins, 2.2, 2.8, and Perkins, but they are mostly under 100 hp and I'm not sure of the type of fuel injection systems on the newer smaller ones. I think a mechanical injection would be the easiest to manage in a swap.

So, does anybody know what a complete 6.5L engine system would weigh?

There are Jeep conversion kits for dropping in the VW 1.9/2.0 diesels, both of which can be fairly easily hopped up to around 200hp/300+tq. Check out Diesel Power April or May (can't remember off the top of my head) for a excellent, in depth look at all the various motor swaps that have kits/professional conversions for. There are a lot of Jeep stuff out there for various small diesels.

Iirc 175# more than 6bt. Yes wider but the 6bt is longer and taller.

The 6.5 sits lower in the frame rails for lower center of gravity.

Low rpm, vs higher rpm and wider torque engine band.
Application really counts. The higher rpm of a 6.5 helps in Street-ability if the gears are down low.
