Weekend Project

i just went and held a 1/8 npt up next to the brass hose bung that threads into the filter manager and it is deffinetly smaller than the brass. so im leaning towards it being 1/4npt now if i could just find that darn tap (havent looked all that hard proly ganna just go buy a new one). the threads on the special fitting that goes into the IP in the other hand are 1/8 NPT i think
 
Well I found an 1/8"npt to 3/8" hose barb easy enough that didnt restrict at all in the conversion. The 1/4"npt to 3/8" hose barb have larger diameter at npt end and it gets smaller at the 3/8" end.

So what I'm saying is there is 1/8"npt and 3/8" hose have the same inner diameter holes, so why cut a larger hole in the filter manager.
 
how deep did you drill i was just starting to do mine and the instructions say not to drill to deep just deep enough. well that doesnt make much sence to me cuz if you dont make the whole hole bigger than there is still a restriction right.
 
also how in the heck did you get that screen out mine is all the way down at the bottom of the tube in the middle (is that where it is supposed to be) and i cannot get my big paws down in there to get ahold of it to pull it out some one enlightent me
 
Well, now you know why the first of us to write up this mod used an 1/8"NPT to 3/8" hose barb, because you can drill out the whole way back to the fuel inlet tube, and just tap the front of it with 1/8"npt.

Both Aces write up and mine had the 1/8"npt, but I'm not sure what Turbine Doc did originally and I couldnt find a specific write up from him.

You just dont want to hit the fuel inlet tube/shaft in the center of the filter manager. There is a tube in a tube, the outer tube allows fuel to get to the IP and the fitting youre putting in, and the middle is for fuel to go up to the top of the filter cap and down into the manager, so then fuel comes back into the center through the filter media and down into the shorter outer tube.

You will see that in these threads. you'll need a flat tipped bit to get all the way back without the tip of the drill bit hitting the tube. I just got as far back as possible and flipped bit around and it spun/pushed through. My thread didnt cover putting the fitting into the filter manager because Aces already covered it. In Aces he explains drilling it out.

With 1/4"npt you might want to drill all the way back with smaller bit, then just 3/4 way back with bit to match 1/4" npt

That screen is just pressed on. I couldn't get mine off by hand, then after using a little BIO through the truck, it now comes off with the fuel filters. Just grab it with any needlenose pliers type thing and pull up or twist. Yes that is where it belongs.
 
TD's picture shows it best, you can see in the back of the drilled out hole the inlet shaft got dimpled by the tip of the drill bit, have to stop there, or preferably before. I did the same thing. And you can see the back of the drilled hole isnt bored all the way out. thats where I flipped the bit to the flat end and it cleaned it out.

As for drilling too deep...I took a spare bit and ground a flat head on the top. This prevented me from drilling into the tube as well as removing any extra material at the very end of the drilled hole. This got rid of the material you can see in the pic that buddy posted. A small pic removed any remaining burs. As for the size of the hole, yes I agree it was more than what is needed. But it was required for the size of the walking j fittings. I dont see it as a bad thing, just a larger hole than needed.

As for the screen chevycowboy......i used one of those right angle flat screwdrivers and pulled it up using the top plastic rim on the screen. And yes, mine was a pain in the ass to get out as well, but i just kept pulling up on it one side to another. If you are putting a new one in then dont wory about breaking the old one. Put some muscle behind it and give it a good pull to loosen it up.
