I am getting a "rattling" noise from the front end of my truck and I think it is the Water Pump! It is the original from 1996. I use the truck for pulling a 16 ft. enclosed trailer for lawn care in the summer and plowing snow in the winter and I know I need to "upgrade" the whole cooling system! I've checked out a few vendors and am looking for some input from others who have replaced theirs. Any and all replies will be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Keith

How many miles on it?

For what its worth ....Might not be the water pump.
Its probably the vacuum pump rattling. Also could be the main pulley hub rubber is fatigued and knocking against the stops. Are you having over heating issues?

Heath recommends the latest and greatest water pump as the one to use. It is suppose to have better even flow between the heads. He did a write up in max torque. There are I think a few threads that reference the GM number in this section.

take the belt off and grab the pulley and see if there is any movement when you twist it or in any direction.

I used a bosch Ho water pump on my 93. $85 from rock auto. I can't see where the gm pump is worth over double that. Restrict the bypass that goes to the crossover. Just my 2 cents.

iirc, you're only supposed to do that on the dual thermostat models.

I think the main hub is not all that tough/rigid and you should be able to wiggle it some so don't put the monkey on it and think its bad.

But it shouldn't be excessive. Watch it while running and look for any serp belt hopping down low between main hub and other pulleys before and after. See if you see any marks on the stop not sure if you can see them can't remember??? I replaced mine thinking it was stressing the serp belt and did not feel all that different new vs old turned out to be not good enough serp belts.

If water pump is leaking then yeah I guess that's probably it.

According to Heath the latest GM waterpump iirc (or which ever he says use in his kit the one in the article) does do a better job of dividing flow between heads.

Looking at pics posted elsewhere the coolant passage to the passenger "low flow" side looks to be redesigned as larger on the latest 'screw clutch on pump' that Heath, and GM, sells.

Fan and clutch change add up quick to do this though.

I gotta tell ya, magnum, I doubt the water pump is making that much of a rattle (unless something is coming unbolted) - check the vac pump, even if it IS only a few yrs old, and don't wait to check that harmonic balancer and pulley... if the rubber is deteriorating in that thing, it can take out a crankshaft and journals like nobody's business.

I mean that. Check it sooner than later, both visual inspection (look for cracks and movement) and by twisting it around by hand.

If that thing lets go at high rpm, things that are (used to be) attached to it break.

It is parked until I get to it this coming Saturday the 16th of Jan. '10! I will check it without the belt on it to hear if it is still "rattling" ! Thanks, Keith
