vegtable oil powered sub help!

I have a feeling its not the PMD. I think its a dirty WVO filter. Happens all the time running WVO. Now the trick is going to be heating the cold fuel system to losen up the cold oil. Have you checked the filters?
Good luck.

thats the delema no warm shop just my unheated garagebut thanks for the advise i have never delt with veg oil

Hello john65td,

If you cannot get it into a warm shop, there is one idea I've been toying around with since I've considered converting to SVO for cold weather situations...

-- Build a skirt around the sub using poly tarps and duct tape
-- Use bricks/rocks/2x4s to hold the tarp down on the ground for a good seal
-- Use a forced hot air kerosene or propane heater to blow from the rear of the vehicle towards the front (be careful not to ignite the tarp)
-- The hot air should heat the fuel tanks, fuel lines, fuel filters, tranny, oil pan and everything else under the truck on its way towards the engine, so you may want to crack the hood a little to get some forced convection going up and around the engine, and in the engine bay (very little will go through radiator)
-- Once the diesel and SVO fuel systems are thawed out, the fuels should start flowing
-- Make sure the batteries are fully charged, have another running vehicle provide a 13.2V+ boost to the stalled vehicle's 12V batteries
-- Don't burn out the starter, allow to cool sufficiently in between long but safe cranks
-- If it still will not start, then consider replacing parts as suggested above but do them one-by-one

A major failure in cold weather is SVO fuel delivery, from the SVO tank, SVO pump, SVO filter, SVO fuel lines and valves. I would install 110V heating cables (used to heat pipes or gutters, either single temp or temp regulating type) alongside/around the SVO fuel system and wrap them with insulation. The heating cables can be plugged into a household outlet via extension cable(s) overnight, or into a voltage inverter installed in the vehicle (to keep the fuel liquid while running on SVO in cold weather).

Good luck and let us know how things go.

Regards,
Franko

Seizure?

Ive experimented with waste motor oil . I seized more than one pump its not worth the gamble especially on the electronic pumps. The pump will seize with sudden fuel temp change or when your fuel is to thick to get between the head and rotor for lube. Good luck !

Ok im going on what i have been told, as this is not my vehicle a guy bought it in indiana and was driving it back. he started out on diesel then when it got up to temp he switched to veg oil. it was running good and then the check engine light came on. he drove for a little longer distance unknow, then it stalled and would not restart. i know it needs a glow plug controler im replacing that tonight. different issue. he had it at a gm dealership along the way they tryed to sell him an injection pump. he didn't want to pay 3 grand so it was towed back to newyork and now i get to fix it. the pervious owner had fsd problems new one is just resting on intake no cooler or anything. i want to get veg oil out of system some is in there it was running on it when it died. then get it cranking and attemp to run to see what the problem is. i plan on going over grounds and all the little stuff first. i know enough to do all that first before parts get thrown at it

I'd like to know what code was set. It could be optical sensor if the oil was too dark. If you have any type of portable heater that you can direct air into the engine compartment as well as plugging in the block heater.

Ok got the suburban tonight. here is a update, vehicle has grease car 2007 system installed it is on, diesel manual stated on display. replaced glow plug controler, now have glow plugs. found block heater plugged in, and charged batterys. then unpluged the pmd that was floping on the intake tested it in my truck. as i supcted its bad. start my truck reves to 2000 rpm then to idle then back up finally stalling. so for sure pmd is bad. hooked know good pmd up to suburban cranked, let starter cool, cranked some more. it acts like it wants to start but wont. have diesel comming out of fuel manager, diesel in system. it needs heated up some more. working on it more tomorrow night

Good work. PMD is huge issue. You might recommend to your client to install a fuel pressure gauge. It's a critical piece, and should be mandatory when installing a veggie kit. The greatest diagnostic tool of all.

I killed my IP with low fuel pressure and didn't know it. Passed the drain test at idle etc. Installed a pressure gauge and barely had Jack for pressure. By then, it was too late, she was dead in another 6 months.

ok update im kinda lost here. new pmd on cooler. i totaly bypassed the whole veggie system. so its now like the stock routing. got fuel to ip from filter manager. all fuses and grounds checked and good. have fuel out of filter vent, and drain tee. took a fuel sample i have no idea what it is. it smells like a diesel, kerosene mix. maybe with some addative in it. i need to dain the fuel system, get some clean diesel and see what changes i think. i have checked almost everything, i think. can you guys think of anything im missing or forgeting

ok if i pour diesel down the intake it will fire and run, momentarly. so i got fuel to injection pump, but not throught injection pump! im guessing the injection pump went bad. out to the garage form more diagnostic

well i went through it and figured out the fuel soleniod shorted out taking out the pmd with it. so i replaced the injection pump and bam, it runs and works like normal. veggie system and all is up and running

Does that mean when you ohm the wires to the Fuel Solenoid is there continuity? Fuel Solenoid must not have liked something, ever figure out if there was kerosene in the diesel? Anti-gel? Veggie is majorly lubricating right?

Compared to dino-diesel, bio-diesel is an excellent fuel lubricant, while veggie-oil is a poor fuel lubricant.

Franko, I think the veggie is almost as good as B100. I am basing my thoughts on gut feel and no empirical data. Do you have some?

Hello Veg_Out. Not by a long shot, I'm afraid. Start with these links, http://www.biodiesel.org/markets/pre/, http://www.shortcircuit.com.au/warfa/paper/paper.htm, http://www.machinerylubrication.com/Read/240/biodegradable-biobased-lubricants

It is important to note that veggie oil may have excellent lubricant properties for non-fuel applications (e.g., transmission, ball joint, bearing, etc.) but for fuel lubricity in diesel applications, it is worse than dino-diesel.

Attached is a letter (almost 10 years old) from Stanadyne to the State of Kansas in support of a resolution to encourage the use of biodiesel in low blend (fuel) levels (only 2%). If veggie oil had good fuel lubricity characteristics, it would have been blended with dino-diesel years ago.

I remember from my research going back almost a decade, an IP on a 6.2/6.5 will last 100k+ on dino-diesel (even more on bio-diesel), whereas you can pretty much set your watch to replacing it at 80k on veggie-oil. That should give you an idea as to how much less fuel lubricity veggie-oil has when compared to dino-diesel (even worse when compared to bio-diesel).

Regards,
Franko
