upgrade 6.5 turbo Help

On my 97 when block heater is plugged in its in a garage but when I go to start it it nearly acts like a carbonated engine. Takes forever to start. Then after it has warmed up and I have drove it shut it off. Then go back to start it and its still warm it still barely wants to start. Is this my glow plugs or something else I need to check first.

Most likely glow plugs and injectors.

Yes could be injectors, they should be replaced every 100k miles with genuine Bosch injectors with pop pressures set at around 2300psi.

Ok well I will be replacing injectors soon

Ok go back and take in everything Jorge said, its spot on.

Hx40 is a big turbo to spool up, I think your barking up a wrong tree if that's your money range. That big a turbo NEEDS a lot more fueling and a qsv to really live in this engine, after you have put in head studs and new head gaskets. Then a better ip and a tune to match. How are your injectors btw? Hx35 is better for where your at or ATT. Those two can be run with out the ip change and not lag to death. If you are going screaming down the hiway with big weight then ok on the 40, otherwise I don't think so.
Really make sure rest of engine is good before bumping up boost pressure or boost volume. Added power to a tired engine is a recipe for an oily driveway.

On the starting issue, what is your rpm cranking speed? what glowplugs are in there and how long are they cycling? Gp should not be a factor if you get engine to 195 shut off then restart in a couple minute I don't think it's a glow plug issue.
Have you done a compression check on it? 400psi is your target dry. Kill fuel supply, Pull ALL gp then run test. Do not run a wet like you do a gas engine, 4-5 drops of oil per cylinder max! Remember oil is fuel for a diesel. If your dry test come up good dont waste time on wet. No more than 10% difference between any high and low or something is not happy.

If you can post a video of starting it here cold and then again after it's warm.

There's more to go into but phone is about dead.

Ok I will try to get video tomorrow for you work nights here in North Dakota.

As far as I know injectors has never been changed bought truck from first owner older gentlemen. Its got 200xxx miles on it so I think it would be in my best interest to change injectors. On both trucks they are both at 200xxx miles and only one owner

For a dedicated tow rig, or one that sees lots of heavy towing, I personally reccomend the a team turbo that LEROY sells. It is not a wastegated turbo, and is matched to the 6.5's air requirements. It will be a little slower to build boost that some of the HX style turbos, but once the engine is in it's power band it will be right there on boost for you. For a daily driver it would be a toss up to me. The HX is going to give you quicker boost simply due to the fact it is a wastegated turbo, and dumps boost to keep boost down at upper RPM's whereas the ATT is matched to the engines air needs and doesn't need to dump boost. And despite what some will say, tuning plays a HUGE role in how the turbos work. If I was running a stock tune, or the tune that many here rave about, I would probably lean to the HX simply because they can cover for poor tuning and make the 6.5 run good with not ideal tuning. If your going to get a good tune, then I would go with the turbo that is matched to the engines airflow needs. And I believe the ATT is going to get the MPG edge as well since it will have lower drive pressures at cruise.

Hey Ferm, who do you recommend for a tune? I need to get mine touched up so just curious who you'd use for a 6.5 OBD2 tune. Thanks.

IMO a TM is a waste of money when the real problem is the undersized turbo. The vac system with a tune works better and can "unload" the turbo during cruise rather than waste fuel for unneeded boost. For a 1/2 ton unloaded with no hills or grades and low RPM the factory turbo is fine. Pulling a trailer with a 3/4 ton you need a bigger turbo period.

At 200K on the engine how is the blowby? A refresh of rings, (gapless rings) and ARP head studs is a good idea for the pulling truck. Just to refresh head gaskets as their life is 200K give or take. The bigger turbo reduces back-pressure and IMO increases engine life.

Another thought: Put a spool valve on a big turbo - no way to describe the sound of Hell trying to escape the exhaust when you have one.

I know HEATH is doing some newer tunes, but TEEMU has been doing some great work here lately as well. Get a hold of Leroy as I think he is selling TEEMU's stuff now.

Yeah I've heard of Heath figuring out some tunes or the HX series lately, so I planned on going that route since I already had one of his tunes. I've never heard of Teemu but I will absolutely check it out, especially since it's always good to deal with Leroy. Thanks for the info!

Sure you have, everybody else knows them as KOJO tunes, but his actual name is Teemu.

I had Heath tweak my tune when I put the HX-35 on. Special door to Heath back to door delivery from Paul. What a great guy. I had the previous flash by Heath and they tweaked it to dump more fuel low end and get my turbo singing sooner. I never ran the hx on the previous tune to give a before and after but I am very pleased with how it runs now.

If you are going to target the injectors first, consider a complete fuel system overhaul including the injection pump, lift pump, and tank. Also check with Leroy to see if he has any of the MRFSU units to replace the fuel level sending unit. And while working in the tank, remove the in-tank filter (known to clog) and replace it with a pre-lift-pump filter from Leroy.

I am trying to upload the two videos that you asked for me to do of my 6.5L 1500 start up but it won't let me. Is there a certain way u have to do it trying to on my phone.
