Unassisted cold start record

Lowest ever for me with the DMax was -26. Didn't have a winter front cover and threw it into limp 30 mi from home and didn't have a means to reset it. 25 mph rest of the way on remote rural roads with the temp dropping. Not fun!

You go into limp with low temps? Fuel gel?

Partly gel and the rest was from IAT and MAF issues. Too much throttle at such a low temp. We had 3 days in a row with around -30* and high winds/blowing snow 4 years ago. There were alot of people gelled because we pretty much NEVER see below -20* and our fuel isn't blended for any lower.

Thanks, I was wondering. I run my 6.5l in those cold days before the dmax (no reason to get the dmax nasty if I dont need to) but dont want to take out in the max and get stranded. I dont have a front cover or anything and on real cold days my ects hover 165-170 and TFT ~120-130*. Doesnt seem to bad and I know my radiator is full of crud to help heating until summer arrives so that has to help in that instance.

That reminds me: If diesel run most efficient ~200* then why in the heck do our LBZ's run so dang cold?

Normal ECT on these from the factory is 205*. With no winter front at -20 you would likely see 170-180 ECT under normal driving load and the trans would stay on the low (100*) peg. At a stop and idle the ECT drops like a rock to 150* or so.

Mine cruises in 50-60* weather at 160-170, I can make it build heat with throttle but when i let out it drops again.
I got a feeling a scan with a freeze data point would tell you your ECT gauge is way off. Either that or somebody changed the thermostats to a much lower rating.

Running edge gauge pod and that's what it reads. PO says he never touched the tstat and he bought the truck w/20k and it had never had a 5th or gooseneck until I bought it @145k. Guess mine is just cold natured...

Sorta halfway between Tok and Fairbanks.

I love that cold. It's what keeps Alaskans harder and more polite than your average folk.

Figured. We drove the Alaska Hwy with the former '95 K2500 Suburban 4wd w/ 6.5TD in 2007. Also the Klondike Loop Hwy, the Dalton Hwy and the Cassiar Hwy (our return ferry blew an engine). I noted that the thermometers in Tok went down to -60 F and reading up on the towns there every listing would have their record low shown. Tok is famous for its sled dogs. One store owner had this whippet type dog with real short hair. I asked the owner how his dog survived the winters. He looked at me and said "we don't stay here for the winter, we go down to Mexico."
