I'm thinking that the inspection cover is not going back on... Should this stuff have just fallen to the ground, there wouldn't be that much damage.
 
My starter's nose cone exploded a few months ago while cranking, the support bracket was installed. It seemed original. Although surprises me you could even start the truck this way without hearing a terrible crunching noise. I replaced the starter and all is well. I did not have any loose flexplate bolts.

These starters are high torque, large compared to others, they got a lot of force on them, I can see why the nose would do that even without another problem.

But if it got through that thick cover and did damage to the oil filter, what damage could have happened without it? Shrapnel every where, could of taken out a tire or two. It is there probably for that reason.
 
I had my flexplate break as well... Sounded horrible, but did not cause damage in the way yours did.

I sent mine to the shop for a quick fix, but if you do not mind pulling back your tranny you can do it at home. Not that hard, just time consuming.

Well, my flex plate didn't break, it's the torque converter bolts that loosened up and fell into the inspection cover.

As for quick fix, I'm really not looking forward to doing this on the gravel outside my garage where there's a mustang without a diffy in it taking up room!! This was not a good time for it to happen... Then again, is it ever a good time?
 
I spoke to the tranny shop... He seems to think the flex plate is the problem (Even after I told him there are no more converter bolts connecting them together, converter bolts that HE installed in December). So I'm probably screwed.
 
You should inspect the Harmonic balancers, there are two, the pulley is the secondary. They can cause flexplate vibration and failure, or if the flexplate is warped or something it will vibrate.

However, I would not readily accept they vibrated out if they had been installed correctly.
 
OH!.....So it's just your bad luck that the Converter bolts he installed and torqed to spec came loose and backed out?....Sounds like he needs to learn that he is responsible for his own work!

And if the flex plate was bad, why didn't it just break like so many others we've heard of....?

Also if the Flex plate was the bad why didn't he SAY something to you before bolting everything back up?

This guy is full of CRAP.....Give him a chance to make good and if he doesn't call DMV or whoever his governing body is and make a complaint......DMV complaints in NY are serious business, and NO SHOP wants to tangle with them....
 
That inspection cover is known as a rock guard. Rocks or other debris can do worse damage then some stupid short bolts if the cover is left off. After all you have had a V belt broken by a rock at some point in your life...

x2. They don't just back al the way out and fall out. The ones on my 96 were a tiny bit loose after 160,000+ miles. Snugged them up and my rattling noise at takeoff from a light went away. Barely turned them any and they were tight again.

The trans guy is very involved in this, whether he wants to admit it or not. He was the last one to touch those bolts, and they fail out of no where? Either he fixes it right, for free(with you watching the entire time I'd say), or you should take his ass to court to get your money back since he clearly can't do a job correctly or take responsibility when things go wrong. See how he likes those odds.
 
U actually have a obligation to make the tranny guy fix it under warranty in order to protect the rest of the people that deal with him. In the US we vote with a dollar and I assure u that if his shoddy work and refusal to warranty his work costs him legal fees and or repair costs he will be more attentive to his quality in the future! U know he will not want a legal issue because word will get around real fast! After all his labor is free and thats usually the majority of the cost in these things.
 
Well, I'm still not sure I want to bring it back to him anyway, warranty or not. I had told him that the truck was used for heavy towing and long distances and to beef up what should be beefed up. He told me he put a shift kit in it (not likely, it doesn't shift any harder than before). I can tell you he didn't diagnose the electrical issue that caused me to bring it to him in the first place either. After having rebuilt the tranny, the issue was still there (which I told him in the first place was an electrical issue). So I don't trust him to lock tite and torque those bolts properly (which he assured me they were "sealed" when they went in). This guy was recommended to me by a tow truck driver that my wife has known for years.

Anyway, I managed to get 4 converter bolts in out of 6. The threads are buggered up on the converter. The flex plate is not cracked but a few holes are elongated due to the improper torquing and the bolts working themselves loose.

I fired it up real quick, crossover pipe not bolted back up yet, but no noise from the flex plate area. I'll take it either to him or a good place I know of to replace the flex plate and possibly converter unless the threads can be tapped and the starter.
 
You should go back to him. It's his fault that your in this situation. PUt blame where it belongs, and the blame does not belong on you. Just think if you didn't see that oil leaking, you'd have lost your engine too.
 
What a SHAME when a Service Tech can't stand behind his work, or admit when he (Or one of his employees) screwed the pooch....

I feel for you brother.....You shouldn't have to pay twice for the same job, bad enough you have to deal with his mistake!
