Has anyone experienced their turbo squeaking on start up? EVERY start up it squeaks. Haven't checked for play yet but will soon. I can still hear turbo whistle just fine and its not eating oil. Gone 4000 miles plus since last top off on amsoil system. Its a GM4 turbo original w/ 242000 miles.

Maybe you alt is getting ready to sieze up?

Thats what I thought and when the alt seized up yesterday and the squeak was still there after I replaced the Alt. My brother in law started it while I was standing looking into the engine bay. Squeak came from Pass Side toward the turbo. This was my 1st time to listen to where it came from.

I will check the return line this afternoon. Do I just disconnect it and start the engine and see If I spray oil or ???

Start without the belt off to eliminate belt driven accessories. A/c clutch bearing is in the same area.

I dought the problem is oil supply, but if you do check it I would pull the supply line (not return) hold it in a bucket with a lid and a hole just big enough for the line to fit into. That might help prevent a mess. Oil is going to come out at 40-??? PSI
Also I would hold the turbo shaft to prevent it from turning (dry) while testing oil supply.

True, I also thought the blower motor is in the same general area isn't it?

If the squeak is still there then what are my possibilities and what do I need to do to narrow it down further. Being the only one there while diagnosing makes it difficult to listen while I am sitting in the truck.

Blower motor is inside cab. Mine squeeks sometimes, but you hear it from inside. Try changing speed on fan if you hear it. I thought the noise was coming from engine compartment area though.

Mk, thanks. I doubt the oil supply is the problem too, that would seem to cause turbo failure pretty quick.

Could the starter be the culprit since it is down below there too? Never had one of those squeak either though.

Getting closer!

I pulled the engine belt off and the squeak was still loud and clear.

When I go to check the turbo this is what it looks like I need to do. Pull the heat sheild off, take the turbo brace off and all (need to do so the sheild will come off), then unhook the steel braided line running to the top of the turbo housing, run line into bucket(or in my case a 1 gal oil jug w/ hole in top), and I assume that there is a shaft sticking out the back of the turbo that I grab ahold of with my channel locks?

Insite needed! Thanks!

Look in the stickys for how a turbo is put together, might give you some insight.
Without oil it would've seized or blownup allready.
look for excessive for/aft and sideplay and free spinning, impeller hitting the snailhouse.

Ok, I wasn't planning on taking it out tonight as I don't want to know how bad the turbo is until summer break when I can pull the NEW turbo off my 94 to get me by until I get an ATT. Good thread BTW.

Is there a way to stop the turbo for spinning w/o pulling it? Refering to Burning Oils post

If not, what else can I check in the mean time and how? Such as the A/C Clutch bk95 mentioned?

Place your hand on the heat shield while it's running. They sometimes vibrate.

I made sure it was good and tight earlier. I will try to get a video of the noise soon so ya'll can hear it. Its kind of enbarassing sometimes. Its like I have a pig squeaking under the hood.

take the intake rubber off the turbo and grab the shaft and see if it has any play side to side or in and out. NOT RUNNING of course. still doesn't sound like turbo to me is anything rubbing on the fly wheel or harmonic balancer?

I think it is the starter myself, but i might as well look at all other possibilities.

Balancer is clear I checked the balancer out while I was stuck on the roadside yesterday. I'm not sure about the flywheel but if there was something rubbing that hard and loud would it go away after start up like my noise does?

The noise only at start up makes me think starter not disengaging soon enough and squeaking. The noise is the same cold or hot.

If it is the turbo, wich i doubt,But check it out now,or you will need summerbreak to put in a new engine cause the engine prob ate the turbo by then.
