Turbo problems

My Father in law has 2000 K3500 with the turbo not working at all. He replaced turbo booster sensor and cross over pipe was fixed. I'm wondering if it could be a wastegate problem and what to do to fix it? Thanks for the help. Gunner.
 
Put a vacuum gauge on it and see if you have vacuum to the actuator, if you don't check to see if you have vacuum to the wastegate actuator solenoid. A common problem is for the wastegate actuator solenoid to fail, but what is even more common is for a vacuum line to crack.
 
Follow back to the pump.

The vacuum at the pump should be about 26 inches HG and a steady gauge.

If the gauge is low or wiggling all over, then the vacuum pump is shot

As mentioned, no vacuum at the waste gate actuator can be a bad plastic line or a solenoid issue as well.

Also as mentioned the plastic lines can go south.

You can replace the lines with rubber vacuum hose.

Just route to avoid hot or sharp stuff.

i personally would suggest doing away with the whole vacuum system. a turbomaster can be made or purchased at a fairly inexpensive cost and compared to replacing a vacuum pump/solenoid or hunting down a tiny crack in a line. i feel it is the best option.

But if you drive the truck much, the fuel milage drop can cost you more in the long run. It has been proven time and time again the factory vacuum system gets better milage driving empty. I personally liked my facotry control system. Other than a few cracks in the vacuum lines that were easy to find, a bad wastegate solenoid, and a failed turbo boost pressure sensor when I bought it, it worked fine. And all of the problems I had with it were related to age as any plastic line older than 10 years old is just waiting to fail, and electrical parts odler than 10 years old have served a good life by most standards.
 
How can the factory vacuum system net you better fuel economy? And where has this been proven? I have never seen any difference on my trucks, but then I have only had one system that wasn't complete junk when I removed it. I am pretty religious about checking my mileage also and never saw a fuel mileage difference between the two systems not that I was looking for an improvement or difference when I did that mod but I am just wondering how the turbomaster would hurt your fuel economy.

Do soem searches and you will find more than just a couple of peopel post better economy with the stock system than the turbomaster. The turbomaster opens via exhaust pressure on the wastegate whereas the stock system opens via a solenoid controlled by the ECM. Running 70 a turbomaster equipped truck can hold 5-7 PSI easily where under the same conditions the ECM would dump exhaust pressure out the wastegate dropping boost pressure down and reducing exhaust pressure. Excess boost is the engine doing more work than it needs to, and results in a loss of economy. Extra boost equals extra load, which equals more fuel used. You only need so much boost to get a clean bunr and keep EGT's in check, anymore is simply wasted fuel to drive the turbo.

This is how many see big jumps in milage in newer diesels with variable turbos. Lower the boost down, and milage goes up. I know stock trucks will routinely hold 4-7 PSI at crusie with stock tuning, drop it back to 2 and you will see a 10-15% increase in milage.
