turbo/non-turbo injectors

Hey everyone. I found a guy who is parting out a 6.5 motor that he got from a gov't auction sale. The motor is brand new in the crate. I asked him about the injectors and he still has them. My question is I am unsure if this was a turbo motor or not and is there a way to distinguish between turbo and non-turbo injectors by looking at them. He mentioned something about a white or purple plastic ring on them? Any help would be appreciated.

What difference, performance or economy wise, would the different pop pressures make? I was looking to buy them for spares, but I think I may have an injector leaking by. While changing glow plugs, I noticed that one of them was wet with diesel.

FWIW I have Aces old 6.5Td tahoe injectors in my 6.2 blazer and they work just fine. the only physical difference i found was the length as the 6.2 injectors are a tad longer. 6.5 NA and 6.5TD injectors are probably the same length(i've never seen a 6.5 NA in person). The pop pressure seems to make no difference either as the truck runs fine.

Out of the body or just the line nut? Probably hard to tell, back off the fuel line and re-torque it. BTW, how tight do people torque these? To snug? Or to almost snug and check for leaks? Gonna swap mine out. Figure I'll see what others do.

The last swap i did i just tightened the lines to the injectors with a 3/4" wrench to the point where i couldn't move the wrench with one arm anymore. No leaks on mine. Just be careful to not cross thread them. Then they'll leak regardless.

I call that Snug. Thats what I did too. always start by hand a few threads for sure.... be kickin yourself in the arse elsewise.

dribbling injector perhaps? When they wear you go from the normal hollow cone spray pattern to more of a stream. If i was a betting man i'd bet that could make the GP tip wet with diesel.

Thats what I was thinking. Out of the four on the drivers side, only one glow plug came out wet. I havn't checked the passenger side lately, but the last time I checked glows on that side, they all appeared dry. Perhaps that one possibly leaking injector causes my white smoke and stuttering on start-up.

Steve

have you checked the timing? also try unplugging your ect sensor in the tstat housing see if that makes any diff

I have no way of checking the timing myself but I will try unplugging the ect sensor and see what happens. The big smoke only lasts about 3-5 sec then she is idleing well.

Steve

The smoke could be the IP or the injectors. What is probably happening is dribbling injectors, which is bad for the cylinder. I would swap the injectors if they are 10 years old or over 100K miles. The injector(s) could be dripping overnight, removing lubrication from the cylinder walls and messing with the seal rings, then when startup it gets pushed out the exhaust.

I replaced the leaking injector with a new one from NAPA. I checked the glow plug on that cylinder after driving a bit and it appears to be nice and dry. I haven't gotten ahold of the guy selling the other injectors so I went ahead and replaced the one so as to not do anymore damage to my motor.

Just curious, was it a Delphi? And did it come with a copper crush washer?

No, it was not a Delphi and it came with the copper washer, although it is stamped "india", it appears to be well built. The part number is "2-18628". I did want to get the Delphi, but they had none in stock. The part# is " DEM6703803" for the Delphi.

The bosch I got from rockauto were new Boshch, stamped w/India too. Also appear well made, and work great so far.

No copper washer however with them. I remember buying napa ones last year due to a mechanic friend messing with them, and the Delphi's came with the crush washer. Of course they were 85bux at napa compared to the 41bux at rockauto, so if the crush washer costs 40bux then I'd understand why.
