Turbo Issues

I have almost 60k on my buddy tune and no issues. There was a problem with a couple of his switch units so it could be possible.

An update on this. Problem persists. On hard accelerations up grades, the turbo will hit 7 psi boost and drop off to 0 psi and it stays there at 0 psi. Turbo will not generate boost until engine is shut down and allowed to cool off. Then the cycle of boost them loss repeats itself.

Wastegate solenoid is new and that code has disappeared.

Nothing has been done with grounds, tank, tank sock, lift pump. It's my son's tuck and I don't drive it. I only advise on repairs.

An ATT has been ordered from Leroy. I am concerned that the issue is signal related and tied into IAT sensor. In other words, it's sensing high IAT and opening the wastegate and dumping boost. He said that it lost boost and blew black smoke going up the Cajon grade this past weekend. Doesn't sound like it's defueling, just losing boost.

Again, I'm not driving this, just relaying the symptoms. I hope that the ATT makes this all a moot point.

Without reading through all these threads, have you REMOVED the air filter and tried it without a filter, it sounds exactly like what mine did with a partly clogged filter.. after I changed to a S&B cone filter the problem is gone..

Have not removed the air filter. It is the flat box filter and it's new as of 2,000 miles ago.

We traded the set of PYOs to Bill Heath for one of his cold air intakes. He said as of last week that he'd have it on its way in the next week or so. That should address any air filter restriction issue.

I'm thinking there is something going on with the IAT sensor or signal that is causing the wastegate to open and stay open. I was hoping to hear comments on that.

Well, it wouldn't take 10 minutes to know, mine was the flat also, even a NEW napa gold would only allow 15lbs boost then nothing and coal would be flowing...

Might be worth it as it might remove one maybe from the list..

High IAT will DEFUEL the engine not just drop off boost to smoke black.

Any codes coming up?

paper clip across terminals a+b in the ALDL connector under the dash and report what codes show up.

Even an absence of codes tells you a lot of info.

Non wastegated turbo like the ATT will eliminate all the issues associated with the wastegate system and the vacuum pump, but won't deal with any other issues that may be lurking in there...

He has GMTDScan he said the CEL has not been coming on since wastegate solenoid has been replaced. I'll have him check for codes again.

Yep, thought I was clear on that, but I myself have a tough time following persons on message boards. Afterall, it's just points of light ;-).

So we're a two generation 6.5 family and I'm still training him :)

I got his order for the ATT Monday then I saw you post here and it clicked.
You trained him well! :hihi:

As as is possible. Some things he learns the hard way. I don't think he did enough trouble shooting on this issue because he was planning to go with the ATT. It's not a primary vehicle, so he only experienced the problem infrequently. It finally just pissed him off to the point that he pulled the trigger. I hope it solves the problem.
