Truck will start off of ether

You know, it's not that hard to either pull and replace or test the glows. Just pull them out, get some 60g or Bosch Duratherm, and you're good to go. If you want to test them, just put them on 12v for a few seconds. I don't think that the 11s were self-regulating, but it doesn't matter, just swap them. It only takes a couple of hours to do.

You can also check if the harness is being energized. Just get a tester and plug one into the glow wire, the one to ground, and cycle the ignition switch.

If they were good one shot of ether killed them for sure. Freinds don't let freinds use ether....That is why there is a sticker saying NOT to use it oR SEVERE engine damage may result. I'd check to make sure the rear support bracket is on the starter and I would replace the starter bolts. Ether has been know to blow the starter right off the motor.

I've seen WD-40 used to start an old diesel. He had a similar problem as treeman. Anybody know if that's bad? I was standing beside him when he started it, and there was no flame-out.

Sorry for the interruption.

the truck sat for about 1 year or a year and a half..When I started it I ran it for about 30 min. I drove it up and down the road. I shut it down id leave it for about 1 hour or so and I went back and she fired right up. Left it go to evening and fired up no problems. went out the following evening and nothing.

This may make you feel better. My 6.2 blazer in my sig sat for 10 years, yes that's a decade, in a field and it fired up right as i got fuel to the IP, even though the IP was totally shot, it still ran it just smoked like hell and had a super lopey idle to it.

That truck started with 3 dead glowplugs, and a bad IP. Compression was from 360 to 400 psi when i checked all 8 cylinders. I doubt you have a compression issue. I'd definately start with the glow plug system as well.

AC 11G's aren't too bad. The AC 9G's which came before the 11Gs were junk. They'd swell and burn out, making them a real pain in the rear to remove. Been there, done that.

The 11G's weren't known to swell, but i pulled a swollen 11G from my blazer, as it had a mix of 9G's, 11G's, and one Champion glowplug when i brought it home.

Here's what that 9G looked like after i was done fighting it for over an hour.

I was very close to loosing half of the element in the engine, which would've been a disaster. That removal required a big pair of vice grips, elbow grease, and a lot of patience.

I'm betting that Ether was the cause of that disaster.

well, our 6.x GMs glow every time we go to fire off. even on a 80 degree morning prior to heading off to the field for harvest.

dad's old 89 Super duty (super duty meant f-450 back then) with its wore out 7.3L NA has junk plugs, so dad used ether for the last year or so of use, definitely didn't help it along any.

i've sprayed ether directly into the motor with the upper intake off and my truck wouldn't even start on it.

fwiw my truck starts at 10 degrees without the glow plugs after about 5 seconds of cranking with 300k on it... if you have fuel and compression it will start w/o the plugs working

If MY CUCV is even slightly warm the glows will not even come on and it starts right up. Gotta love 24v starter. It is the only 6.x engine I have ever owned that had a working inhibit switch and started that good.

In addition to the glows, another reason you should NEVER use ether in a 6.5 is because of the outrageously high compression. It may not hurt a big old non-glow 14 liter engine, but the light duty pickup with 23:1 or whatever it has is just too dangerous (to the motor). I've seen a 6.5 engine torn down after ether use, there was a hole in a piston I could put my fist through.

Yeah, in the old trucks like 3208 cats(which had what 5:1...:D) or the 2 storke oil slob Detriots it came factory as a starting aid but beyond that, I wouldn't use it on any diesel. I showed Matt and TD and Bill what a shot of it did to the head on my skidsteer. And the Deutz is a tough engine.
