List and describe any other factors which are not addressed in this checklist. We can’t see, hear, smell, or touch your truck, so the more descriptive information you can give, the more likely it is that somebody can assist you.

Bought this truck from Maryland in September of 2015 had towed home. My mechanic had it running the next day. I started once a week until I had surgery in January 2016. Truck sat until March. I only cranked it twice in March. Been not starting since the 3 rd week in March and is ticking me off. Please help

Corey

Couple of things stood out to me. First was glow plugs test them to see if they are working. If not get Bosch 80034. Also you said you weren't getting fuel out the water drain you should be getting fuel out of it for the first few seconds when you turn the key and continuously when it running. If not your LP is dead. OPS won't be an issue with your obd2.

Ok thanks for your input. I got a great deal on the truck I think. Just trying to get it running so I can get it inspected.

Welcome to the forum. Hang in there with the patience, pros here will get you rollin soon.

When it is cranking over, what rpm while cranking?

Yeah I will wasn't trying to sound like tool was just stating I'm planning to order those parts when I get paid later this week.

I have no idea on the rpms.

Also plug that thing in diesels start better warm

Is plenty warm enough in Richmond Va (even with our 'cold' snap of lows in the 50's this week). But as a test, would not hurt to try a pre-heat just to see what happens. Or just wait until the weekend when the forecast is in the 80's :)

I'm order a lift pump and ops switch if I don't hear from someone later this week.

Consider taking things one at a time rather than throwing parts at it just to see if you got lucky.

Toward isolating whether the lift pump (LP), oil pressure switch (OPS), or both died consider:
> grabbing a test light
> un-plugging the lift-pump
> plug in the test light
> turn the ignition to 'On'

If the test light turns 'On' for the duration that the 'Wait-to-Start' light stays 'On' and both lights turn 'Off' at the same time, the OPS is at least working normally.

Question: When it did start, what was the experience when the motor fired-up? Did it seem like all cylinders 'lit' and made a lot of clatter (until the motor was warm and the clatter died-down)? Or did it stutter for a few seconds and puff any smoke?

That checklist was not meant to be an application form, you need to test those parts.

You cannot say "Unknown", etc.
There should be links along with those lines.
If not, ask.

On a 99, the OPS is not a factor in running the LP.
In other words, if OPS is bad, LP should still run unless the OPS shows 0 psi.

You will learn to know your cranking speed by sound. Not enough RPM and these engines will not start. No glow plugs and these engines may not start in 110 degree weather.

Here is a clip of sticking injectors. Note the speed the engine is cranking at. Unlike gas engines that will start hardly turning over you need 100 RPM cold and 150 RPM hot to start minimum. If your engine sounds slower than this check batteries, cables and then the starter. The 6.5 starter can be half dead, crank at half speed, but still spins: won't start.

With this much sitting I suspect your batteries have sulfate and are toast. Jump start attempts on one of these 10 HP starters with bad batteries will not get it started period.

If she is cranking fast enough:
Do you get fuel at the water drain with the lift pump relay bypassed and the lift pump running? - must have this or give it up.
Watching fuel drain from the FFM while cranking just airlocked the IP - lots of cranking with the LP running to get it out. Recall 30 second bursts than cool for 2 min or you will be replacing the melted starter.

Are you out of fuel with a bad fuel gauge?

When you got fuel at the water drain you can loosen an injector line nut and see if it's getting fuel. The PMD tests are under the reference section.

Forgot to post got the truck running last Saturday. Was old fuel. It turns out the fuel gauge always reads full lol. Previous owner said it stalled a lot. So I was looking at new pmd. But there is a grey one and a black one being sold. Mine is on the ip and its black. I plan on moving to the bumper. My question is which pmd brand is going to give me less headaches? I have read all the posts on pmd via every websites. But still unsure which to buy.

Ha! Yes, sucking air will do that :D

FSo I was looking at new pmd. . . .But still unsure which to buy.

I'd go with whatever Leroy is selling and not install it until after the remote mount is ready.

Consider also getting a second cooling fin and move the current one to a spare part supply in the truck. This way you have a known good PMD setup just in case the new one goes bad.

Quick question why hasn't anyone ever moved the pmd in the cab? Or I have a place between my flatbed and cab that's 6inches wide and open to air movement

Might work in the cab just as well as in front of the radiator. But then you have to find a place for it and the heat sync to fit; also, that is one more hole through the firewall.

In the 90's I was putting them in the cab in fleets. What we did was put it so the vent could cool it via AC in summer, and the blend door with an adapter arm would block heat off it in the winter- another problem.

In the end it's not worth all that extra- just go back of bumper unless you go water fording.

Mine has been on my skid plate out front for 12-14 years. It was from Heath Diesel.
