yesterday hard knocking started coming from the rear of the motor...after inspection today the flex-plate has failed and shifted covering the converter bolts...so tomorrow we'll be pulling the trans out to replace the flexplate...

I was hoping it would have been a simple fix like loose TC bolts, but no such luck... FML:nonod:

I'm gonna try and talk the wife/justify a billet replacement for the new build...wish me luck:eek:

Hope it is an easy fix for you Pepp and doesn't turn out to be something major. Best of luck to you with that... and convincing the wife. ;)

Paul, glad to hear you confirmed what is was. Not the easiest thing to replace but I am sure you will be fine.

tell the wife safety and reliability. mention borke down in a ghetto as a possibility if you dont get what you want. :) good luck with it, hope it is cheaper and easier than you planned!

Well at least you didn't scatter the motor! Good luck with the new stuff. A persuasive guy like you should be able to slide the good stuff through...:hihi:

"But that's the only one that is even made for my year and model truck..." :hihi:

Seriously, hope you get it fixed quickly so it can go back to work.

The fix is cheap...I have a lot of spare parts...

Pulling the trans is the challenge leaving the TC on the motor w/o damaging something

OWWWWWW ... that hurts. I assume it all came apart OK? No other damage?

Nice pics, Pepp .. good luck getting it all back together. Did you manage to slip the 'good' parts past the little woman? :)

Paul, your an animal....:hihi:

You should really cut back on the amount of Goldfish your dragging around.....

Glad she went back together pretty easy for you. Things are so much easier with the right equipment and the correct sorted tools.

I'm confused, is there more than one plate ? One looked like it had no ring gear ??
As far as parts, just buy and explain later...:D
I pay the credit card bill so there is no explaining here...:D

can we say "hard launches"

ummm...I take the 5th

Would all that power have anything to do with it?

I wish you luck on a fast repair.

Thanks...these things have a mind of their own...some stock trucks break them where as Pat McSwain (aka McRat) has never had Casper break one...

Hardest part was pulling the tranny back with the TC still hooked to the flywheel on the motor...with the flexplate being broken, the TC shifted to where the bolt holes did not line up to remove the TC bolts...the flywheel was gouged pretty good as you can see in the pics... but I had another one of those as well from the previous motor...

and I showed the wife the pics of what happens to these things and she is leaning towards me building the new one motor pretty stout...keep plugging away i always say ;)

well Steve worked a few hours past his usual 7:00p.m. bed time(thanks again my friend) and I worked straight through to 2 a.m. to get it done...so I'm not sure easy would be in the vocabulary

better to ask for forgiveness than permission?

I wish it was worth the arguments that would cause :hihi:

two parts the flywheel/ring gear and the flex plate...

the flywheel goes on the crank first, then the flex plate and then a washer type thing(the name escapes me)that sits in the center of the flex plate and then the eight flywheel bolts go through all three pieces...

the TC does not bolt to the flywheel/ring gear, but to the thin flex plate that is bolted to the flexplate and crank...

something like this(a billet all in one design) would solve that problem...

Yea... the flex plate is thin...too thin AFAIC for 1000 ft.lbs of torque...

but as I said before there are some trucks with much more HP and Tq that have never broken one...It's a crap shoot...If I had money to waste I would have a metallurgist examine the failure...

forgot to add...early am Friday after coming home I grabbed a couple hours sleep and took the Kids crawfishing...started the truck and went to to move our traps and nets to a better/different location and the battery light came on and the voltmeter was on 10...Dang alternator was on it's way out and we had to cut our trip short to make sure we made the hour ride home safely...threw a new one on this a.m. and all is well...
