I couldn't find anything hitting the fan like the other guy. :)

Truck was running fine. Fresh oil change. All guages read normal. No check engine light. Just made an aweful racket and died.

I posted a video to my blog. Here.

I have a mechanic friend who thinks its the injector pump. I haven't drained the oil yet. There is nothing leaking and the guages all still show as normal as can be for only running like 5 seconds at a time.

Let me know what you think.

Sounds like rod and/or crank bearings. Were you driving it and the noise started then it quit? Leo

First things first. You need to fill out your signature so we know the details of your truck. 2nd fill out the diagnostic check list so we can see the big picture.

What do you mean by awful racket when it stalled the 1st time? Was it sputtering, jerking, or was it loud banging like metal on metal. Metal on metal like a rod or something like that you would really notice and normally runs w/ a broken rod. Not long but it will run. Normally longer than 5 seconds. I would unplug the optical sensor (the big plug on the top of the IP) and try to start in limp mode. It will take about 10-15 senconds of cranking to start. If it starts and runs w/ out a knock like a rod then it is probably the IP.

:iagree:What Rodd said ...

Fill out your signature... wouldn't want to be giving you advice for a 6.5 diesel if your truck is a Suzuki gasser...

Then copy the diagnostic checklist to a new post and fill it in, so we can see what some of the variables are.

Both items are found in my signature.

Holy crap! I WISH it was just the fan. For sure check the harmonic balancer and drive pulley, but sounds more like flexplate than IP. Good luck!

D-Oh... I did hear it, knew it wasn't a gasser, but didn't know what-all had been done to it so far.

I went back and scrolled down to find ... viola - a list of what's been done to it. D-Oh again...

I agree with the guys - either flexplate (if you're lucky) or broken crank (sorry, but kinda sounds more likely). Something is banging every revolution, which is a very ugly sound.

I wouldn't start it until I could check the flexplate, balancers, and turn the thing over with a swing-handle and try to find out what is hitting.

I hate to sound negative, but by the sound of the video, it sounds like it cranked over unevenly, -indicating lack of compression in one or more cylinders.

Also, when it did run, it was not firing on all 8 (see above).

Sounds like either a broken crank, and/or rod(s). There is also the possibility of a dropped valve due to a broken rocker button (possibly a holed-piston with valve-frag still in the cylinder).

My personal advice is to not run it any more and bar the engine over by hand (with glowplugs removed) to feel for anything abnormal.

If there is a broken rod, you'll surely be able to tell by barring it over by hand while someone holds their finger over each glowplug hole. You can pull your rocker covers to check for a dropped valve. If you find a hole(s) that don't blow any air out of the plug hole, -or you feel any sharp mechanical resistance, you have a serious problem. You may as well drop the oil out of it, -check for metal/glitter.

Unfortunately, my money would not be on the injection pump.

:frown5:

I think it is missing one cylinder. If you listen carefully during the start up it has a miss. I could be wrong but to me it sounds like a crank, rod, or piston. but as stated above it could be a rocker but it just sounds like it is hitting together on the bottom end.:mad2::sad:

Thanks guys. :grouphug: When it originally happened I still had oil pressure. It ran for about a minute sounding like that before it died. At first I thought I had dropped my exhaust. Then as I lost power I knew it was bad. Sounded just like when I blew a cylinder in my first car. It didn't really stay running long enough to check the oil pressure when I started it. It does crank over harder then it used to. Basically looks like it will be sitting until spring, unless someone wants to lend me a garage. :) It was 8F here today and supposed to get colder. Plus I had to scrape over 2ft of snow off the hood to get to the engine to make that video. :) Not good conditions for working on a truck. :mad2: Bummer!

You have all been awesome.

I know the feeling when it comes to the cold. I am waiting also to get stuff done without the cold n snow:mad2::mad2: I feel your pain....

An update to this thread...

I bought this Burb from Tin Soldier back in October. in my feeble attempts at getting it to run, I found that it sounded like the timing was off. It would fire, but not really right... and indeed it did have that 'knock' to it. During one of my attempts, it took right off, ran GREAT for about 3 second... until it locked up tighter than a drum!!

My diagnosis at that point... was a broken crankshaft. I was right! I finally got the oil pan off that engine today, in preparation for the swap. See the pics....
