transmission upgrade?

Getting the 4L80 bolted up to your 205 will not be much of an issue.

The parts are available and a 205 that came from behind a TH400 should fit (Key word, SHOULD)

You will need to move the cross member back some as the 4L is slightly longer.

Go with a stand alone controller. Far less issues unless you totally understand the wiring and such.

Yup yup, if I remember correctly the 205 DID come from the factory behind the 4L80-E in 1991 V3500s. Also, side note, that 1991 NP205 is the only one with an electronic speed sensor.

Just got an email from Suncoast, they are still moving fwd with a beefed up 4L80E currently in test now, mated to a Dmax of all things

Can you think of a better way to test it's capabilities? :D

With all the folks that dis the 6.5 and the 4L80E as being inferior I was a little surprised, but great news indeed that the project is moving fwd.

FWIW my current 4L80 has some h/d stuff in it probably not on par with what Suncoast is doing, but my 4L80 has served very well & IMO a respectable trans in it's own right.

I'm keeping close eye on their progress as they are only 2 hrs away from me, and will be good to mate to my project 6.5 engine.

That is great to hear. After my '83 the trucks I spent the most time in while growing up were 94-98 Silverados (all 454s, sorry) and I love the GMT-400 platform. I would dearly like to put together a 6.5 truck...yup, that's right, Duramax for a DD and I REALLY want a 6.5 to build up. (How can I not with Mr. Heath a couple hours away? :) Can't forget all of the knowledge here either, I love reading the 6.5 threads.)

It boggles my mind that TODAY the 6.5 is still put down as much as it is. I don't think those people have ever heard of Heath Diesel, GEP, the Humvee, the Optimizer 6500, etc... (whoops, better not derail this thread too far)

The DURAMAX is there whole reason for building up the 4L80E trrans. The ALLISON isn't the best trans for racing as it sucks up quite a bit of power, doesn't shift the fastest, and can easily break if the shifts aren't set up perfectly(tie-ups will destroy an ALLISON QUICK!). The DURAFLITE costs a small fortune to buy, and requires frequent maintence behind the DURAMAX. So the 4L80E is a logical option for the racers as it is lightweight, already has a chevy bolt pattern, can use GM electronics to shift it, and is pretty stout with some basic upgrades. The problem comes in when you couple the HP, torque, AND the weight of a full size truck. I know they've been working on it for awhile now, and have had some heavy duty converters out for awhile as well.
