tranny trouble

I'm not an 3xpert, just semi versed. If you have a pressure or dlutch problem, it's going to show when they ate loaded. When you drive it easy, it could be running minumum line pressure, and hold just fine, but when you get on it it would slip. The db2 problem would be if it is putting out to much power for the throttle setting, and line pressure is to low because of it. The same thing can happen with an optic bump. This one is going to require diagnosis to figure out. It may be a faulty epc solenoid, but if its been driven for long that way, there will be damage done to the clutches from it.

Epc solenoid? Im sorry. This is totally new for me. Ive only had the truck a few months. Ive been fixing it up. Its got a lot of miles on it but runs like a top. Was just hoping it was an electrical issue. Fluid is red and nice. No metal flakes or burn smell.

@THEFERMANATOR

Thought: if the tranny was slipping a little before he bought it and the p.o. Does a trans service/ flush so fluid looks and smells good. Now the new fluid start washing out the packs and plugging the new filter with debris.

Drop the pan for a look? If the filter is plugged a new filter and rerun the drained fluid if its good or $ is tight. Probably only need 2qts and the filter.

Or would he be better to do the test first- just thinking he might get lucky as he will have to take it to a shop most likely for trans testing.

EPC=electronic pressure control solenoid, or the solenoid that controls the l8ne pressure for the trans. It wouldn't be a bad idea to drop the pan, but I'm betting somebody did that already to unload the truck on somebody else. Flushing them cleans the fluid and such up, but often times causes them to go out shortly thereafter from all the devris com8ng loose with the fresh fluid.

Yeah, thats what I thought happened. Once in a while when it does that it can plug the filter with the newly washed out material. I just cant remember if it was low or high pressure fail that goes with it.

Crazy- unfortunately if im right all reusing your fluid with a new filter will do is buy maybe 5,000 miles.

You can try doing it, but other than that you need to get a gauge on there to diagnose more. Ive rebuilt a few trans, but I wont try troubleshooting one myself once it gets into it very far- call around your area for the free estimate shops IMO.

what type of gauge are you talking about? and where do i put it? was also told it can be tge eprom bad, but i cant seem to find one. The computer was not even in the holder in the dash so im trying to see if its even the right one or maybe he changed the prom out?

If the PROM was bad, normally it will effect more than just the shifting. For a 94, the PROM is programmed with engine AND trans data, so it controls both. If theres a problem with it, it will normally effect everything, not just one. The pressure gauge hooks to the pressure test port on the side of the trans to verify if the line pressure is following what the ECM is calling for. As to wether you have the right PROM, hopefully somebody can find the link to the page where the PROM codes were posted up years back. I'll try and look for it as well, but hopefully one of us can find it. We will know to know ALL the details on the truck though to know which PROM it should have including gear ratio, engine, year, which pump, and so on.

Did some digging. It looks like the origanal BLRD PROM code was for the oddball 5068 injection pump, and at some point it had the pump changed out, and the PROM changed to the BMRM code to work with the newer style 5521 compatible pump. So, so long as you DON'T have a 5068 pump, you have the correct PROM chip installed. I would stop worrying about the PROM as the chances of it causing this are about 1 in a million. If you had all kinds of random issues occuring with no codes, ryme, or reason, then I would suspect an ECM or PROM, but yours doesn't fit this description.

Ok, thankyou. I looked antheall over trying to find that info. my pump has the green tag on it which i believe is the good one. I had suspected the previous owner h anthead changed things.
The wiring had been messed with under dash and steering wheel has been off also. No horn button or wires, dimmer switch broken.
