thinking of buying 6.5

Where do you live?

Sounds like a very good shape vehicle, with low miles on it. If you plan on keeping it for a very long time, Consider that into your price. Assuming it healthy now, there is no reason that truck wouldn't last for a very long time with care.

Start low with cash in hand, see what happens.

If that truck is everything you're looking for, get it!

If the truck is obviously cared for inside and out, it probably is mechanically speaking also.

yeah it is deffinenetly what i have been looking for. the current owner has owned several 6.5 and seemed to know his way around the engine and truck. he seems to be the kind that when something needs fixed or attention he fixes it. so as far as i can tell it has been cared for.

by the way i am in central il

Oil cooler lines are a common problem as the factory system flat out stinks.

A few vendors on this site sell stainless kits that include new cooler too, for a clean, long lasting, leak free design that thread into the block, instead of the retaining clips, which can pop out if the clip rots away. They are around 200 bux.

Cab corners, thats nothing for a 93... could leave it for a few years, could grind it all down and if not rotted through repaint it, or bedliner coat the entire strip like I did on bottom of my doors.

If that is your only concern, then go buy the damn thing, so we can officially welcome you to the 6.5 life, and get you started on a few cheap mods to make that thing come alive and pull strong for the next 15 years of its life!

There is also some excellent OBD1 software available to function as a scanner for cheap money too.

i am gonna start with the things that need done just to insure the reliability of the truck, clean radiator and condensor. new oil cooler line with possible new cooler. transmission filter and new fluid. glow plugs. not really into making lots of power more interested in reliability and longevity. but you never know, once the bug bites i may have to itch.

The picture looks really nice.

A guy on auto trader . com within 200 miles of springfield, IL, had a nice looking '93 with extended cab, 4x4, diesel and 100k miles for $5G. Other than than, some decent looking gas powered 2500's, some for more, some for less, but not much with low miles, diesel engine, 4x4 and 3/4 ton.

Assuming the truck is only worth $4,500 and you pay $5,000, so $500 too much. If you drive it for 5 years, that's only $50 per year. One repair on something with higher miles will offset the difference. Of course that one could break down, too.

Sounds like you've made the decision to buy. Let us know how the negotiations work out.

my mind could be swayed on the truck but as of now it is the best truck i have came across. in these times it seems used trucks are getting good money, which is bad for me but good for those looking to get rid of one. i just want to insure that the one i purchase will provide me with years of good service. i am willing to take the measures to insure that.

i must say that prior to what i have learned from this website in the short six weeks i have been looking, i really thought i should be leary of the 6.5, but now i am thinking this is the engine for me. you guys are doing a good job in helping me build confidence in the 6.5 and that the few quirks can be solved with little to no money spent. thanks for all your help and your egerness to help, Tom

While I believe the 6.5 to be a good engine just be aware if the previous owner overheated it and I'm not talking boil over I'm talking extended 210+ temps It could have issues that you can't see internally. So be aware clean and meticulous doesn't mean everything. It is still a used truck. Not trying to talk you out of it just a heads up. But any used vehicle carries a certain amount of risk. Good Luck

6.5 is a great engine with a bad reputation. It does not compete with the newer diesels power/performance, but it only costs a fraction of the price, to buy, and to fix.

It will do everything and more than you need it to. Just don't tell too many people our little secret :)

yeah i haven't made my mind up completly as i can't even make it back down there till saturday, but unless something better comes along (which i highly dought will happen) i should be a 6.5 owner this weekend. thanks guys for all the help!!!

well i am picking it up sat morning, so i am looking forward to having you guys help me make my to do list. when i get home i'll post up some good pics and then we can start the list. thanks guys for all the help you have provided me with.

Cool man! You must be excited! Small cheap mods are addictive, but turn a stock 6.5 into a well breathing, well performing, long lasting, reliable machine for little money!

I always like it when vehicles change hands to someone who is going to better them. Gives them new life, and new purpose.

i got it home but we had to take the girls to the christmas parade but i was able to get it cleaned up. will take pics in the morning to share. oh, and yeah i am excited. i am in the diesel club again.

Great bud! Most of us here get excited when someone else buys a new 6.5 too... I know I sure do. I look forward to reading your adventures over the years...

well didn't get any pics taken but i was able to get a few things done. AFTER i put up christmas stuff oh so much fun.
got the old man running boards removed and turned the torsion bars up to help level out the front to rear. then i also did the air filter box trick. while i was in there i checked the turbo and all looked well. oh yeah got some new wiper blades at Menards $2.00 each, they should last forever.
not sure what is next but probably start with rear brakes, then i don't know.
