Not a lot of action on this category, I take it. Oh well, I'm used to it. But I'll post anyway.
Put 300 miles on ole Beulah this weekend, and something I don't do often. Mainly cause of the Flintstone floorboards, among other aging body parts. The frt end, frt tires, and exhaust is new, along with the 6.2 being rebuilt about 50K ago. The manual 4 speed, and duelly rear have lots of life left in them, so I chanced dragging my double axle trailer from Ct. to the Boston area loaded with parts from a parted out 79 Formula Firebird, that a member from another forum purchased.
The 6.2 is definitely not a hill climber M/T, never mind pulling a load. It was slow going with 4.10s and no OD, but it made it W/O an issue. The thing that tickled me pink, was in over 300 miles, it only used about 15 gallons of fuel. That works out to an amazing approx. 20 MPGs, with a 1/2 ton of car parts on the way up, about 500lbs of steel in the bed on the way back, and pulling a trailer. I wouldn't have believed a 5000lb C-30 pulling a trailer could do it, but it did. Here's a pic of it resting after its journey. It was tired, and deserved a well needed rest. (Like me)
Oh yeah. Mother nature pulled a fast one on the trip. Gutta love April snow in New England.
(At least it's covering some of the rust.):)

The way diesels used to be (cheap, slow, under powered, high MPG) before the 'whose got a bigger d***' Horse Power wars the big three have been in.

The NA 6.2's got decent mpg, my brother had a 87 with a 5 spd.
I wish mine had an OD. What model was that 5 spd? Are they still available? are they as rugged as the 4 spd?

Yes: NV4500. Know of one place that sells them *new* and allegedly fixed the know issue with the 5'th gear nut (but they are not a vendor here).

In terms of durability, the NV4500 is good for 460 ft/lb and have seen plenty of TTS members with 6.5 TD's tow with it, so it will likely work for a N/A 6.2 :)

Thanks for the link Leroy. That's a better price, than a "Gear Vendors" OD conversion. (Still too much money for my budget.)

I like how they advertise "not as civilized as nv4500". Personally I think there's a cool factor to it with the extra gear shift also.

Good that they are honest about it bieng louder, too- looks like they aren't trying to hide anything.

Suspect this disclaimer is for the Jeep crowd. Something tells me that a 6.2 / 6.5 is still the loudest item in the powertrain and nobody will notice the Ranger :D

Shoot, I had a couple people try to tell me that the IP gear drive would whine (and produce vibration harmonics) and stated their experience with racing engines turning 7K+ RPM's. So far I remain correct that the lower revving 6.5 IDI is the loudest / most 'harmonic' component in the bay and the gears are not noticeable at any level :) But I digress . . .

Well, it does whine (at least DSG) but you and to listen for it. I never put high mileage on mine and kept them, they got sold.

Gear drive does transmit vibration (difference in crank to cam) more than chain- but double roller chain stretches from vibration also. In hotrod gasser world this is common knowledge, so that's why they run belts to ease wear of roller lifter and roller rocker from transferred vibration.

Our timing chain gets away with it because we have a plate holding back our camshaft. On gassers where the chain keeps the cam in place having our chain store H will kill a gasser from the camshaft gear hitting the timing cover.

That is one thing I wonder is timing gear vibration went to lifter rollers and roller rockers- if someone did that long term and didn't use fluidamper balancer, would they only get 1 million miles from the valve train roller parts instead of 2 million? Haha

I still run "Sid" my '84 K-10 back and forth to work(not everyday) 45miles one way . Stills averages about 22mpg, Just hate to 700r4. I put a NV4500 in a '82 I had and it was sweet for what it was. No adapters then had machine shop make a plate to go between trans & bell housing. It's so ugly makes traffic merger easy!

So Smokey, you said no adapter, (for the 4500?) but then said you had a plate fabbed? What was it for?
Hey Jay, I like that Ranger. Sort of like a 2 speed rear end, only on the frt. (Still out of my price range, for my truck), but if I ever hit the lottery...

It was an adapter to fit the 4500 to stock bell housing. I could only get a bell housing for a hyd clutch at the time. Sorry guess it was a bit misleading.. It was a 4-sp OD truck (you know the one 60mph in reverse! LOL)

Just a known known. Nothing different in the GM NV4500 over the Dodge that eliminates the 5th gear nut from backing off and I recall some members here have had that issue. It was a bomb proof 4 speed transmission with OD (5th) added later as an afterthought. The 5th gear nut backing off is a known problem.
