straight pipping a 6.5 ?

Drone = unifrequency resonance... a continuous noise, amplification.

Loud. Annoying. Noise.

Go ahead, give it a try... if it's too loud, it will give you a headache when you go on a trip. You can always put a muffler on later.

Warning: Gets WAY louder when pulling a load.

I agree on all this. And I am only 22 and love loud exhaust, but the drone is something totally different

put straight 3" downpipe to 4" back in and I agree that a good deep gasser growl is a beautiful sound. However the drone doesn't stay at the back by the exhaust, it goes straight into the cab, and into your head, then your wifes, then back into yours doubled. I did find a resonator(4" straight open) took care of the drone, but left a good growl.

there are different levels of resonators and check state/local laws, some require a muffler. no straights allowed.:icon_bs:

one of my exhaust setups, i used a dyno pak cherry bomb. 4" ports, and it flared out to 5" throughout the middle. a little baffling on the side, but overall, basically a free flow setup. it was for legalization only. it was a little quieter than the truck is now, but still plenty of spoolup being heard. i lost it went i slid off a logging road while fighting a wiring problem on a icy hill. hit a stump or something and ripped it off in deep snow.

i would probably put one back on just for legalizing it, if i did the exhaust again, as being caught without it could prove a headache if the cop wanted to make it a bad day. :nonod:

IIRC, i bought it for under $100. it did get rid of that drone.

buddy: i had a 1981 F-100 with the I-6 300 and a 3 speed column shift. i straight piped that, (seeing a pattern? lol) almost as soon as i got it. in the first two gears, it sounded okay, along the same sound line as a cummins. but if you put it into 3rd at a lower gear, the drone would literally start shaking windows and making your head hurt. i plead 18 years old to that one. :mad2: ):h

I run a 3in downpipe that changes over to 4in and 4in pipe to just in front of the axle with a turndown. It's load and doesn't sound great and the droaning sucks on the highway. Get the exhaust out from under the truck and it will be much better.

I did that with a 4" muffler and it still sucked, but now I have it going out the side with a muffler and its still way loud. This is since I put on the ATT. I have a second straight through muffler to put inline. The kind I have are pricey, but said to not have any flow degredation from multiple mufflers. I think the SSDS quiet muffler might be the economical choice for 4" exhausts. With the GM4, couldnt hear the exhaust over the engine, but now its opposite.

i thought everyone said that the gm x series turbos really quiet down the exhaust so a strait pipe is fine. your saying the drone is really bad you cant stand it

Mine was quiet with the GM4, with a muffler, with the ATT and muffler its still just plain loud, although I have a straight through muffler with resonator, so the resonator could be making it worse. If you have a muffler the resonator isnt needed on the ATT, its already pretty throaty.

I have a straight 3", no cat no muffler, that exits in the factory location. I don't have any drone or PITA noise at all. It actually doesn't seem any louder, exhaust wise, inside the cab at all to me but I do have more of a turbo whistle inside the cab now. I think if you get the exit out from under the truck you will be fine. I did have a dodge diesel that had a bad drone at around 2000 rpm, like everyone has said it was cool for about a week :rolleyes5:.

Loud is OK... heck, us old guys are half deaf from the loud music and loud exhaust when WE were in our 20's.

Drone isn't... drone cuts right through deaf..

You find yourself wanting to speed up and slow down, just to make it vary a bit.

Yep, drone will drive you insane, it gets deep into your head and makes your brain twitch. Loud is ok, drone, not so much. Drone also makes it impossible to talk or listen to a radio.

I did things piecemeal, ass backwards. I still have the stock GM turbo.
Improved the intake first, sounded better, slight increase in mpg and power.
De-mufflered and "emptied " the cat, TM replaced vac system. Sounds better, not annoying, slightly better mpg/power.
Flowmaster crossover got me 1/2 mpg better, no noticeable noise increase.
finally, Flowmaster Downpipe 1.5 - 2 mpg better, noticeable power, no more noise.

Note; when I had the the downpipe OFF, I fired up the 6.5 just to hear it, reved it to 2500rpm; almost the same sound as with the complete exhaust, but with no load.
I basically have a 3" exhaust from DP out, with a resonator as the empty cat. last 2 tanks averaged 20.5 mpg, 1/2 loaded running up and down hills and in traffic, stoplights and freeway, we only have about 3 miles flatland out of 100 miles running on our normal routes.

When I got my truck in 01, first thing I did was dump the factory 2.75 inch exhaust, the damn soot trap must have weighed 80 lbs. Put on a full Banks 3 to 3.5 inch kit with downpipe, huge rv muffler and cat delete, really woke the truck up. But the exhaust was whisper quiet. When the muffler rotted out I took a chance and put in a piece of straight pipe, with a 3.5 inch straight pipe exiting out the passenger side behind the dual rear wheels, there was no drone and it sounded AWESOME! That didn't last too long before the rest of the exhaust rotted and i replaced the whole thing with a Diamondeye 4 inch system. That came with a nice straight thru muffler, and while i really wnated to delete the muffler again, I didn't quite dare. What I did was turn the muffler backwards so the straight thru effect isn't diminished at all by the little louvers inside the muffler. It sounds great, not as throaty as it was with the 3.5 straight pipe, but it sounds like a V8. When I added the ATT it seemed to get a little louder, and I lost a little of the turbo whistle. It used to whistle right off idle, now it has to get a little more rpm then it whistles nice.
I am very happy with mine, no drone and it sounds pretty tough. If I were to do anything different I'd maybe lose the muffler, but I don't see any need to now.
Like I said, no drone whatsoever, but mine's pointing out from under the bed, and it exits behind a couple of TSL tires so it doesn't bother me at all way up at the other end of the truck. And I'm not a big fan of loud exhaust.
